Overview
Juugo is a character from Masashi Kishimoto's manga series NARUTO and its sequel BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS. Known as "Juugo of the Scales" due to his volatile dual nature, he is an exceptionally tall young man with orange hair. He serves as a vital member of Team Hebi (later renamed Taka) alongside Sasuke Uchiha, assisting in major operations including the Five Kage Summit infiltration and the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Appearance
Juugo is a towering young man over two meters tall with orange hair and orange eyes. When activating his Curse Mark ability, his body skin alters and his physical features mutate, generating demonic forms such as horns and organic weaponry. Upon transferring his cellular material to heal another person, his physical frame temporarily shrinks to the size of a young child.
Personality
Juugo naturally possesses a tranquil, gentle disposition, disliking unnecessary violence and taking pleasure in spending time in forests and communicating with small animals. However, he suffers from uncontrollable, sudden fits of extreme murderous rage that completely overwhelm his peaceful nature. Out of fear of harming others during these episodes, he willingly isolated himself. He feels deep gratitude toward Kimimaro and Sasuke Uchiha—the few individuals capable of suppressing his violent outbreaks—and demonstrates absolute loyalty to them.
Abilities
As the original source of Orochimaru's Curse Mark, Juugo possesses a unique clan body type that passively absorbs natural energy, a state known as Sage Transformation. In combat, he reshapes his limbs into lethal biological weapons or compressed chakra cannons. He can communicate with small animals using localized Curse Mark waves. Furthermore, he can transfer his own cellular mass to heal allies or absorb flesh from others to restore his own physical energy.
Background
Seeking to prevent his uncontrollable urges from causing harm, Juugo willingly confined himself within Orochimaru's Northern Hideout. There, he befriended Kimimaro, the only person capable of calming his rage, and allowed Orochimaru to research his unique fluids. Following Kimimaro's death, Juugo agreed to join Sasuke Uchiha's newly formed team to determine if Sasuke was worthy of Kimimaro's devotion. After the war, he returned to Orochimaru's side, continuing to live under observation.
Relationships
Kimimaro was Juugo's first true friend and the only person who could soothe his murderous violent rages. Juugo views Sasuke Uchiha as Kimimaro's living legacy, displaying unwavering devotion and offering his own power and vitality to protect him. Juugo also maintains long-standing ties with Suigetsu Hozuki, Karin, and Orochimaru, serving alongside them both in Team Taka and in later research operations.
Trivia
All the Curse Marks developed by Orochimaru and distributed to subjects like Sasuke Uchiha and the Sound Five were derived directly from Juugo's bodily fluids. When first introduced in the series, he stood out as one of the tallest human characters in the story. According to character reference details, his favorite foods are small fish and milk, while he dislikes chicken.
