Overview
Orochimaru is a major character in the Naruto series, initially introduced as a renegade ninja from Konohagakure. Trained by Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, the three came to be known as the Legendary Sannin. Seeking mastery over every jutsu and total immortality, he deserted his home village after conducting forbidden human experiments, later founding Otogakure. Over time, his role shifts from a primary antagonist to an observer and researcher who assists the next generation.
Appearance
Orochimaru has very pale skin, long black hair, and golden eyes with slit pupils framed by distinct purple eye markings. He wears earrings, a forehead protector, and layered Japanese-style attire featuring short outer sleeves over longer under-sleeves, secured at the waist by a thick purple rope belt. When revealing his true form, he appears as a giant white snake composed of numerous smaller serpents, complete with human-like eyes and hair. Depending on his current vessel, his visual age and biological body alternate between male and female forms.
Personality
Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Orochimaru is exceptionally ambitious and self-centered. He approaches his goals with extreme ruthlessness, treating human lives as disposable test subjects in his quest for absolute immortality. Despite his cold demeanor, he possesses a striking charisma that commands devotion from marginalized outcasts whom he takes under his wing. He habitually speaks in an uncommonly polished, feminine tone while maintaining a calm, calculating outlook. In his later years, his dangerous personality softens into that of a relaxed and reflective mentor.
Abilities
Orochimaru is capable of utilizing all five basic chakra natures along with Yin and Yang styles. He developed the forbidden technique Living Corpse Reincarnation to transfer his soul into new host bodies, and mastered the Impure World Reincarnation to resurrect the dead. His combat arsenal relies heavily on serpent-themed techniques such as Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, Mandara no Jin, and the Eight Branches Technique. He wields the Sword of Kusanagi directly from within his body, summons the powerful Triple Rashomon for defense, applies the Five Elements Seal, and manipulates Curse Marks.
Background
Orphaned at a young age, Orochimaru was trained by Sarutobi Hiruzen and hailed as a genius. Traumatized by the loss of loved ones and the horrors of war, he grew obsessed with conquering mortality. His unethical experimentation led to his exile from Konohagakure, after which he temporarily joined Akatsuki before creating Otogakure. Coveting the Sharingan, he targeted Uchiha Sasuke as his next vessel. Though he led an invasion against Konohagakure that cost his former master his life, Orochimaru was eventually struck down and sealed. Resurrected during the Fourth Shinobi World War, he chose to assist the Allied Shinobi Forces and later settled into a monitored research role.
Relationships
Orochimaru maintained a complex dynamic with his former master Sarutobi Hiruzen, whom he ultimately fought to the death. Alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade, he formed the Legendary Sannin. He cultivated deep loyalty in subordinates like his primary medical assistant Yakushi Kabuto, Kimimaro, and the Sound Four. He took Uchiha Sasuke under his wing to prepare him as a body vessel, though Sasuke eventually turned against him. In his later years, he takes on the role of a parent toward his synthetic son, Mitsuki.
