Overview
A major character in the Naruto series, Hatake Kakashi is an elite Jonin of Konohagakure and the leader of Team 7, serving as the mentor to Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke, and Haruno Sakura. A prodigy who graduated early and later served in the Anbu black ops, he earned renowned aliases across rival nations. He eventually assumes the role of the Sixth Hokage. Beneath his relaxed, nonchalant demeanor lies an exceptional strategist and leader devoted to protecting his comrades.
Appearance
He is a tall, lean man with spiky silver hair and half-lidded eyes. A mask permanently covers the lower half of his face, including a distinctive mole near his left lip. His left eye features a vertical scar across the eyelid; beneath his forehead protector lies a transplanted Sharingan, giving him heterochromia when unveiled. When disguised as the photographer Sukea, he wears purple eye makeup, uses colored contact lenses to conceal his Sharingan, and covers his scar.
Personality
Laid-back, calm, and highly observant, Kakashi approaches life with an unbothered, mild-mannered tone. He is notorious for arriving hours late with flimsy excuses, a habit stemming from time spent grieving at the village memorial stone. Driven by past losses, he places teamwork and the safety of his comrades above rigid rules. He is also an unabashed, avid reader of Jiraiya's adult romance novel series.
Abilities
Utilizing the transplanted Sharingan in his left eye, Kakashi can instantly replicate over a thousand ninja techniques, earning him worldwide fame. He possesses mastery over all chakra nature transformations. His signature technique is the Chidori (Raikiri), a high-density lightning assassination jutsu he created himself. He can also execute the spatial dōjutsu Kamui to teleport objects into another dimension, and employ summoning jutsu to call upon canine companions.
Background
The son of legendary ninja Hatake Sakumo, Kakashi became a Jonin at age twelve. After losing his teammates Uchiha Obito and Nohara Rin during the Third Shinobi World War, he inherited Obito's Sharingan and transformed his rigid mindset to prioritize protecting friends. Following years of service in the Anbu, he was assigned to lead Team 7. He guided his students through numerous perils and ultimately became the Sixth Hokage following the Fourth Great Shinobi War.
Relationships
He serves as the teacher and leader to Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke, and Haruno Sakura. Originally trained under Namikaze Minato alongside teammates Uchiha Obito and Nohara Rin, he maintains a close bond with their memory. He shares a lifelong, passionate rivalry with Might Guy and is respected as a senior figure by his former Anbu subordinate Yamato.
Trivia
His family name Hatake translates to field, while Kakashi means scarecrow. For much of the series his true face remained a mystery, until it was officially revealed in a special side-story manga and anime episode 689. Additionally, drama CD lore notes that he has kept a daily personal journal without missing a single entry since entering the academy at age five.
