Overview
All For One is the primary antagonist and central mastermind of My Hero Academia. Referred to by the name of his extraordinary power as well as titles such as Sensei, he is the shadowy leader of the League of Villains. Having once brought Japan under his criminal reign, he stands as the ultimate symbol of evil in the series.
Appearance
Standing 225 cm tall, All For One possesses a massive build. A devastating past encounter left most of his face severely disfigured, leaving his facial features above the mouth replaced by scarred tissue, with his eyes and nose destroyed. To cope with severe respiratory damage, multiple life-support tubes are attached to his face and neck. He dresses in a black suit featuring a tailored black jacket and matching black pants.
Personality
Presenting himself with a calm and polite demeanor, All For One uses the modest personal pronoun "boku" while displaying a relaxed, conversational tone when speaking of himself. Beneath his courteous exterior lies a deeply sadistic and calculating mastermind who takes pleasure in manipulating others. He excels at psychological warfare, capitalizing on emotional vulnerabilities to incite self-destruction in his opponents. Despite his formidable intellect, his core drives are surprisingly immature and self-centered, fueled by an absolute belief in his own power and a persistent, spiteful obsession with tormenting All Might.
Abilities
His Quirk, All For One, allows him to forcibly steal Quirks from others via hole-like openings in his palms and either retain them for his own use or bestow them upon others. This ability works on all Quirk types, including mutant forms, and enables him to combine multiple stolen powers simultaneously. His favorite combat tactics include unleashing compressed air shockwaves boosted by physical enhancement Quirks and utilizing infrared and radio-wave Quirks for spatial awareness and controlling Nomu. However, transferring Quirks can cause severe mental and physical breakdown in unadapted recipients, and stolen Quirks retain the lingering consciousness of their original owners, which can resist his control under pressure. Additionally, he relies on a stolen longevity Quirk that doubles his lifespan at the cost of physical agility.
Background
Born as the elder twin brother during the dawn of the Quirk era, he displayed an overwhelming possessiveness from infancy. As extraordinary abilities emerged worldwide, he expanded his influence by stripping Quirks from individuals and granting them to allies, quickly building an empire to become the undisputed ruler of Japan's underworld. His reign was halted after a brutal showdown with All Might, which left him mortally injured and reliant on life-support equipment. Operating from the shadows, he collaborated with a doctor to create biologically engineered Nomu and groomed Tomura Shigaraki to serve as his successor and the vanguard of the League of Villains.
Relationships
He harbored an intense possessiveness toward his younger twin brother, Yoichi, unwittingly creating the legacy of One For All by forcing a power-stockpiling Quirk upon him. He views All Might as his absolute nemesis, carrying deep trauma from their past battle while relentlessly seeking to break his spirit. He acts as a mentor under the title of "Sensei" to Tomura Shigaraki, shaping him into a successor to carry out his malice. Additionally, he maintains a long-standing alliance with the Doctor, who provides medical support and assists in creating biological weapons.
Trivia
His original surname is Shigaraki, which he bestowed upon his protege Tomura Shigaraki. When he steals Quirks, the lingering consciousnesses of the original owners often haunt his dreams to mock him until those Quirks are released. His younger brother Yoichi once reflected that if All For One had possessed even a trace of empathy, his ability to take and grant powers could have been the gentlest gift in the world.
