Overview
Yo Shindo is a hero student attending Ketsubutsu Academy High School in My Hero Academia, operating under the hero name Grand. Introduced as a second-year student who participates in the Provisional Hero License Exam, he later advances to his third year. Although he initially appears to be a polite and refreshing young man on the surface, he is a sharp and calculating hero candidate behind his pleasant exterior.
Appearance
Yo Shindo is depicted as a handsome young man with a refreshing and well-groomed overall appearance. His visual design places a strong emphasis on a stylish haircut, giving him a naturally appealing aesthetic.
Personality
On the surface, Yo Shindo acts polite and encouraging toward outsiders, but underneath he harbors a calculating and two-faced demeanor. When situations fail to go according to his expectations or during the heat of combat, his courteous facade slips into much rougher language. Despite his strategic mindset, he prefers to keep his true personality concealed and becomes self-conscious when caught out of character. Katsuki Bakugo notably perceived the disconnect between his friendly tone and underlying intentions right away.
Abilities
His Quirk, Vibrate, allows him to induce powerful shocks in any object he comes into contact with. Through his ultimate move, Shindendouchi, he can create massive land splits and widespread seismic activity. Utilizing this power forces a strong recoil back into his own body proportional to the tremor's intensity; however, constant exposure has built up a high resistance to shockwaves within him. He has also demonstrated remarkable resilience by enduring intense sonic attacks.
Background
During the Provisional Hero License Exam, Yo Shindo used his power to split up opposing formations in the first phase and provided key tactical defense in the second, successfully earning his hero license. Upon advancing to his third year amid public instability, he participated in civilian evacuation efforts. While negotiating with a self-defense group in Daina City, he clashed with the escaped villain Muscular. Although defeated, his maximum-power vibrations weakened the villain's armor, allowing Izuku Midoriya to strike the decisive blow. In the final war, he helped capture Skeptic, eventually ranking 20th on the Hero Billboard Chart JP eight years later.
Relationships
Yo Shindo is in a romantic relationship with his classmate Tatami Nakagame. During the license exam, Katsuki Bakugo immediately saw through his polite act, and Shindo was later flustered after accidentally exposing his rougher side in front of Izuku Midoriya. In his fight against Muscular, he was rescued by Izuku Midoriya, who capitalized on the vulnerability Shindo created. During the final battle, he teamed up with Ms. Joke and Hound Dog to pursue escaping targets.
Trivia
Outside of his hero training, Yo Shindo enjoys fishing as a hobby. He is also remembered for paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln's famous maxim regarding spending the majority of one's available time sharpening an axe before attempting to cut down a tree.
