Overview

Torino Sorahiko, operating under the hero name Gran Torino, is a retired Pro Hero in My Hero Academia. A former instructor at U.A. High School, he was a close confidant and ally of the previous One For All successor, Nana Shimura. At her personal request, he undertook the rigorous training of a young Toshinori Yagi, the future All Might. Although he purposefully avoided public fame and remained obscure to the general populace, his combat prowess rivals top-tier heroes, and he later serves as an indispensable mentor to Izuku Midoriya.

Appearance

Gran Torino is an elderly man of exceptionally small stature, standing just 120 centimeters tall, though in his youth he possessed a tall and muscular frame. He features grey hair and facial hair. His equipment includes footwear outfitted with air discharge nozzles on the soles, along with a scarf wrapped around his neck. Following severe combat injuries, he relies on a walking cane during his rehabilitation.

Personality

Gran Torino initially presents himself as a senile and eccentric old man, but behind this mask lies a sharp-witted and pragmatic strategist. As an instructor, he employs a strict discipline system that leaves a terrifying impression on his students. He exhibits zero interest in fame or prestige, preferring to reside in quiet obscurity. Despite his stern demeanor, he demonstrates exceptional foresight, quick tactical reasoning, and deep concern for the growth and safety of young heroes.

Abilities

His Quirk is Jet, which allows him to forcefully expel air from nozzles on the soles of his feet in proportion to the volume of air he inhales. This enables rapid, multi-directional movement indoors and outdoors, as well as brief periods of flight depending on his lung capacity. His momentum-driven kicks possess enough force to shatter solid concrete. His ultimate attack is Jet V8 Wild Speed. However, his mobility is limited by his oxygen intake, and full-power usage causes intense strain on his elderly waist.

Background

Torino Sorahiko originally had no interest in hero work, but to fulfill a request from his late friend Nana Shimura, he obtained a license and taught at U.A. High School for a single year to train Toshinori Yagi. He subsequently retired to Kofu City until taking Izuku Midoriya for an internship, helping the boy master his power control. He returned to action during major crises, combating Nomu in Hosu City, fighting All For One in Kamino, and investigating the League of Villains alongside law enforcement. After sustaining severe injuries from Tomura Shigaraki during the war with the Paranormal Liberation Front, he retired from active service to undergo rehabilitation.

Relationships

Gran Torino shared a bond of deep trust with Nana Shimura, taking on her legacy to mentor her successor. He served as the primary trainer for Toshinori Yagi (All Might), whom he addresses by his given name; his brutally intense training left Toshinori with a lifelong fear of him. He later mentored Izuku Midoriya, teaching him practical control over One For All and eventually bestowing his scarf upon him. He also cooperated with allies like Detective Tsukauchi, Endeavor, and Sir Nighteye to oppose All For One and Tomura Shigaraki.

Trivia

His hero name is taken from the Ford automobile model and the Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino. His initial introduction, feigning senility before revealing his formidable strength, serves as a direct homage to Yoda from Star Wars. His favorite things are taiyaki and sleeping in. Because his teaching tenure at U.A. High School lasted only one year, his name was left off official faculty rosters, giving rise to hyperbolic urban legends about his grueling training methods among former students.
