Overview
A prominent character in My Hero Academia, Kayama Nemuri is a Pro Hero who operates under the hero name Midnight and teaches Modern Hero Art History at U.A. High School. Dubbed the "R-Rated Hero," she is widely recognized for her provocative attire and alluring persona. Beneath her flamboyant exterior, she is a dedicated and warmhearted educator who balances her active hero duties with mentoring the next generation of heroes.
Appearance
Midnight is a tall woman standing 175 cm with spiky long black hair, blue eyes, and a distinctive mole underneath her eye. In her personal time, she wears glasses. Her hero suit consists of a breastless leotard worn over an extremely skin-tight bodysuit (skin-toned in the manga, white in the anime), thigh-high stockings attached to a belt with garter straps, high-heeled boots, wrist cuffs, and a red domino mask. She carries a whip named "Aino Muchi" and a Juliana-style fan called "Jurisen" as accessories.
Personality
Although her provocative appearance and domineering tone present a sadistic image, Midnight is genuinely a compassionate, supportive, and enthusiastic teacher. She harbors a strong obsession with youth, thrill, and high-spirited competition, often being openly moved by her students' passionate efforts. Off-duty, however, she possesses an exceptionally bad drinking habit; when intoxicated, she recklessly mixes haphazard cocktails and forces her peers to consume them.
Abilities
Her Quirk, "Somnambulist" (Nemuriko), allows her body to release a sleep-inducing fragrance from her skin, which incapacitates anyone who inhales it and proves notably more effective on male opponents. To activate it, she must tear her costume to expose her skin. While perfect for non-lethal target restraint with minimal collateral damage, her physical abilities remain those of an average adult woman. Her ultimate technique is "Sleepy Hollow." She utilizes her whip "Aino Muchi" and fan "Jurisen" to send her sleep gas accurately toward specific locations.
Background
An alumna of U.A. High School, her dangerously revealing debut hero costume famously compelled the government to enact formal laws regulating hero costume exposure. As an active hero, she convinced her junior, Aizawa Shota, to take up a teaching position at U.A. Throughout her tenure, she served as chief umpire for the school sports festival and led key practical classes. During the Paranormal Liberation War, she deployed to the front lines against the Paranormal Liberation Front. While attempting to halt Gigantomachia's advance, she sustained severe injuries and entrusted final tactical decisions to Momo Yaoyorozu and her classmates before tragically dying in the line of duty.
Relationships
She maintained a close relationship with her U.A. juniors, Aizawa Shota (Eraser Head) and Yamada Hizashi (Present Mic), having personally encouraged Aizawa to join the U.A. faculty. Her students affectionately referred to her as "Miss Midnight." She monitored students like Mineta Minoru and Sero Hanta during exams and held high praise for Yaoyorozu Momo's leadership capacity, choosing to rely on Yaoyorozu and her peers to make the critical call during her final battle.
Trivia
Early concepts for the series originally slated Midnight to be the homeroom teacher for Class 1-A before the role was assigned to Aizawa Shota. Mirroring her in-universe legacy of causing costume regulation laws, her visual design faced real-world censorship modifications across various media adaptations, including altering her tights to white in the anime adaptation and extending her corset coverage in video games.
