Overview
Yousetsu Awase, operating under the hero name Welder, is a student in Class 1-B of U.A. High School's Hero Course in My Hero Academia. Known as a skilled support figure with strong judgment, he serves as one of the level-headed voices of reason within his class.
Appearance
Yousetsu has spiky black hair held by a checkered headband, prominent thick eyebrows, and sharp sanpaku eyes. His hero costume resembles a work outfit topped with front torso armor, complemented by waist pouches containing tubular steel frames.
Personality
Described as a modern teenage boy, Yousetsu possesses impressive decision-making skills and practical initiative. Raised in a small factory background, he is grounded and sensible, standing alongside classmates such as Sen Kaibara, Kosei Tsuburaba, and Hiryu Rin as part of Class 1-B's main sensible group. When standard peacemakers are absent, he steps up to restrain chaotic peers and offer apologies on their behalf.
Abilities
His Quirk, Weld, allows him to fuse any touched objects—whether organic or inorganic—together at the molecular level, leaving a distinct seam upon connection. He can also undo the fusion at will. His special technique, Weldcraft, involves rapidly binding opponents to surrounding structures using steel frames he carries.
Background
Coming from Shomi Junior High, Yousetsu enrolled in U.A. High School's Hero Course. During the League of Villains' attack on the Forest Training Camp, he risked his safety to protect an injured classmate while fleeing a Nomu, managed to attach a tracking device to the creature, and paved the way for locating the enemy hideout. He later participated in the Joint Training Battle. After graduation, he eventually established a joint hero agency alongside his classmate Kosei Tsuburaba.
Relationships
Within Class 1-B, he forms a group of sensible male students alongside Sen Kaibara, Kosei Tsuburaba, and Hiryu Rin. Following their shared peril during the training camp incident, he harbored a slight interest in Class 1-A's Momo Yaoyorozu. During cultural festival preparations, he stepped in to correct Neito Monoma and apologized to Izuku Midoriya. He also teamed up with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu, Juzo Honenuki, and Ibara Shiozaki during the U.A. Sports Festival cavalry battle.
Trivia
He hails from Niigata Prefecture, sharing his birthplace with the hero Lunch Rush. He enjoys handheld mobile games. In U.A.'s practical entrance exam, he achieved a 10th-place ranking. The series author has remarked that he is an enjoyable, highly relatable character to write dialogue for.
