Overview
Flame Hero Endeavor, real name Todoroki Enji, is a major character in My Hero Academia. Renowned for resolving more criminal incidents than any other hero in history, he spent many years as the world's No. 2 Pro Hero behind All Might before inheriting the No. 1 spot following the symbol's retirement. As the founder of his own hero agency and the father of U.A. High School student Todoroki Shoto, he initially exhibited a ruthless fixation on producing a successor to surpass his rival. However, assuming the responsibility of the top hero forces him to confront his harsh past and seek redemption both professionally and within his fractured family.
Appearance
Todoroki Enji is an imposing, muscular man standing 195 centimeters tall with short red hair and green eyes. He uses his Quirk to generate a blazing beard and mustache of fire around his face, which he displays to demonstrate his power. His standard hero costume features flames wrapped around his upper torso, hands, and feet. After becoming the top hero, his updated suit incorporates large rounded shoulder armor designed to suppress emitted flames. Following a fierce combat against a High-End Nomu, he acquired a prominent facial scar spanning the left side of his face around his eye.
Personality
Endeavor possesses an unyielding determination and intense perfectionism, defined for years by an obsessive ambition to surpass All Might. He is stern, fiery, and uncompromising, demanding the same harsh standards from those around him as he does from himself. While his stoic refusal to court media popularity initially gave him an intimidating persona, his sheer efficiency and analytical crisis management earned deep respect from sidekicks and law enforcement. After inheriting the No. 1 position, his rigid worldview softens; he acknowledges his past mistakes, shows genuine remorse toward his family, and strives to become a leader worthy of public trust.
Abilities
Endeavor's Quirk, Hellflame, allows him to produce and manipulate extremely high-temperature fire from his body. It possesses destructive firepower, long range, and versatile applications, including aerial movement via flame jet propulsion, heat rays emitted from his eyes, throw-able fire lances like Ignited Arrow, concentrated melee strikes like Vanishing Fist, and large-scale fire whirlwinds like Hellfire Storm. However, continuous overuse causes heat to build up internally, deteriorating his physical capabilities. Beyond combat, he exhibits exceptional tactical intellect and outstanding instructional skills when training younger heroes.
Background
As a middle school student, Enji witnessed his father die attempting to save a bystander, instilling in him a desperate craving for absolute strength. He attended U.A. High School and quickly rose to become the No. 2 hero, but hit an overwhelming barrier in All Might. Despairing of bridging the gap himself, he arranged a Quirk Marriage with Todoroki Rei to produce an heir with combined ice and fire abilities. After three children, Todoroki Shoto was born, whom Endeavor subjected to intense, isolating training that alienated his family. Following All Might's retirement, Endeavor became No. 1 by default, prompting a period of self-reflection where he resolved to face his past sins and protect society as a true symbol.
Relationships
Endeavor's relationship with his youngest son, Todoroki Shoto, began as an abusive dynamic driven by ambition, but gradually shifted toward genuine mentorship and redemption. He shares a tormented history with his wife, Todoroki Rei, whom he pushed to breakdown through a forced Quirk Marriage, though he later seeks atonement. His failure with his eldest son, Todoroki Toya (who became the villain Dabi), remains his deepest guilt. He maintains a complex family dynamic with Todoroki Fuyumi and Todoroki Natsuo while rebuilding their home. He viewed All Might with intense rivalry and envy, while developing a solid professional partnership with the No. 2 hero, Hawks.
Trivia
Endeavor's hero name derives from the English word for effort. Author Horikoshi Kohei originally considered placing Endeavor on U.A. High School's teaching staff, but abandoned the idea because it would tilt the story's power balance too heavily toward the heroes. Prior to becoming No. 1, his stern and uncompromising attitude earned him a dedicated niche fan base; when he later attempted to interact politely with supporters, some long-time fans expressed humorous dismay at his softer demeanor.
