Overview
Nomu are bio-engineered weapons appearing in My Hero Academia. Created by All For One and the Doctor (Kyudai Garaki), these artificial modified humans serve as the frontline heavy hitters for Tomura Shigaraki and the League of Villains. Engineered specifically as a countermeasure against All Might, the Symbol of Peace, they inflict devastating damage upon hero society throughout various encounters.
Appearance
Nomu universally feature exposed brain tissue where skulls would normally be, and typically appear barefoot with bare torsos. Visual traits vary significantly by individual and rank: lower-tier models possess white or grayish skin, while upper-tier and High-End models exhibit black or dark purple skin. Physical variations include heavily muscled builds, oversized mouths, elongated necks, avian feet, or wings sprouting from the back. Specific variants display headgear integrated with visors, six arms attached to industrial tools, small bodies connected to cables and helmets, or armored plating concealing the head.
Personality
Standard Nomu lack emotion, initiative, and independent thought, acting as mindless puppets that only respond to direct orders from masters like Tomura Shigaraki. They are programmed with base directives, such as losing consciousness during interrogation. In contrast, the top-tier High-End models possess basic speech capabilities and tactical awareness. Certain High-End individuals, such as Hood, are specifically programmed with battle-obsessed mindsets, actively seeking out powerful combatants to challenge in battle.
Abilities
Through bodily modification and All For One's Quirk, Nomu are grafted with multiple Quirks simultaneously. Utilizing reanimated corpses grants them high damage endurance and physical strength exceeding ten times that of a normal human. Exhibited Quirks vary by model, including Shock Absorption, Super Regeneration, Muscle Augmentation, flight via wings, tool-generating arms, liquid spatial transport, liquefaction, body expansion, and telekinesis. Their universal weakness is head destruction, which permanently halts bodily function regardless of regenerative powers.
Background
Nomu originated from research conducted by All For One and the Doctor to construct weapons capable of neutralizing All Might. To prevent living bodies from breaking down under the strain of hosting multiple Quirks, the Doctor utilized his medical position to covertly exchange deceased bodies and reanimate them. Nomu were deployed across major incidents, including the USJ attack, Hosu City, and the Forest Training Camp. The program evolved to produce intelligent High-End variants, Near-Ends, and ultimately the peak Masterpiece, which synthesized a living subject kept in a near-death state.
Relationships
All For One and the Doctor act as the creators of the Nomu, overseeing Quirk implantation, physical enhancement, and upkeep. Tomura Shigaraki commands the Nomu in field operations and eventually becomes the base for the ultimate Masterpiece. All Might served as the primary target for their creation, engaging the initial Nomu in combat at the USJ. Endeavor and Hawks are key Pro Heroes who fought high-tier variants like Hood and the High-Ends. Dabi oversaw specific operations involving Nomu, including the forest camp raid and the field test in Fukuoka.
Trivia
All For One callously likened the horrific process of fashioning Nomu from human remains to "wine making," drawing harsh condemnation from Gran Torino as an embodiment of pure malice. In the anime adaptation, voice actor Tsuguo Mogami provided the vocal effects for several Nomu models, including Hood, while also voicing Mr. Compress. Additionally, the Nomu featured as the milestone 5,000th monster entry in the mobile game Monster Strike.
