Overview

Shoji Mezo is a character from My Hero Academia and a student in Class 1-A of U.A. High School's Hero Course, operating under the hero name Tentacole. He possesses a Heteromorph-type Quirk that directly alters his physical form. Although his tall stature and distinctive features give him an intimidating initial impression, he is exceptionally calm, polite, and rational. Demonstrating outstanding composure and a strong sense of selflessness, he acts as a dependable protector for his classmates, excelling in both combat support and reconnaissance.

Appearance

Mezo stands at 187 centimeters with a large frame, making him the tallest student in Class 1-A. He features silver hair worn in a pompadour and sharp sanpakugan eyes. A face-covering mask conceals the lower half of his face to hide scars around his mouth. Extending from his shoulders are two pairs of jointless, flexible tentacles alongside his natural arms, connected by skin membranes. Due to his physical structure, his school uniform and athletic wear are modified into sleeveless tops. His integrated mask-and-suit hero costume features six suction cup-like symbols lined across the torso.

Personality

Mezo is a quiet, reserved, and polite individual who exhibits a level of maturity far beyond his age. He is unselfish and lacks strong material desires, usually refraining from seeking the spotlight. However, when his allies are in danger, he willingly puts himself in harm's way to protect them. He remains level-headed during high-stress situations, refusing to be swayed by group emotion and offering calm, logical guidance. Despite his intimidating exterior, he is warm and approachable with close friends, occasionally demonstrating a playful sense of humor.

Abilities

His Quirk, Dupli-Arms, allows him to replicate his body parts—such as eyes, ears, mouths, and hands—at the tips of his shoulder tentacles. While he can sprout multiple organs from a single point, doing so reduces precision. Replicated organs possess enhanced sensory capabilities, enabling him to detect subtle footstep sounds through structures. He also boasts exceptional physical power, having recorded a grip strength of 540 kilograms using three left appendages. His battle techniques include Octo-Searcher for wide-area scouting, Octo-Blow to strike with over twenty duplicated arms while keeping watch behind him, Tentacle Punch to attack with three fists on one side, and Octo-Spansion, which bundles his arms into a heavy blow.

Background

Born in a rural village where prejudice against heteromorphs persisted, Mezo faced severe discrimination from an early age due to his Quirk, which his parents did not share. During his childhood, he rescued a young girl from a flooding river, only to be brutally assaulted by local adults under the irrational pretext of having touched a child with a "corrupted" body, resulting in permanent facial scars. Following this trauma, he adopted his signature mask to hide the scars and spare the girl guilt. Rather than harboring vengeance, he resolved to become a noble hero who could inspire hope. At U.A. High School, he proved vital in critical operations, including the Central Hospital defense where he peacefully confronted a rioting heteromorph crowd. Eight years after the war, he ranks among the top heroes and has earned the Imamura Peace Prize for resolving discrimination-driven conflicts.

Relationships

Mezo shares a deep bond of friendship with Fumikage Tokoyami, frequently cooperating with him during training and school activities. He places immense trust in Izuku Midoriya's quick thinking and determination, pairing up with him during critical rescue moments. When Class 1-A debated rescuing Katsuki Bakugo, Mezo worked alongside Tsuyu Asui to calm Eijiro Kirishima and Tenya Iida, preventing rash emotional choices. During the Sports Festival's cavalry battle, he allowed Minoru Mineta and Tsuyu to ride on his back in an unorthodox defensive formation. In the final conflict, he faced Spinner and addressed the angry heteromorph mob, using his own painful history to advocate for peaceful progress over violent revenge.

Trivia

His hero name, Tentacole, is a combination of the word "tentacle" and a lighthearted pun referencing an octopus ("tako"). His full name, Shoji Mezo, is derived from the traditional Japanese proverb "walls have ears, sliding doors have eyes" (kabe ni mimi ari, shoji ni me ari). Modifying his U.A. school clothing into sleeveless attire is a standard tailoring option provided in hero society for individuals with specialized physical Quirk traits.
