Appearance
Tenya Iida is a tall, muscular teenager with short dark blue hair, matching blue eyes, and distinctive thick eyebrows. He wears white-framed glasses and maintains a stern expression. His most notable physical trait is the set of metallic exhaust pipes protruding from the backs of his calves. His hero costume is a lightweight, white full-body suit of armor equipped with a helmet inspired by road-racing headgear. The helmet contains sight-correcting lenses that allow him to fight without his glasses, while the leg armors house auxiliary cooling units and engines.
Personality
Tenya Iida is defined by his unyielding seriousness, absolute respect for authority, and intense dedication to duty. He strictly enforces decorum among his classmates, frequently accompanying his lectures with rigid, robotic arm gestures. Though his extreme earnestness occasionally leads to comical misunderstandings or overreactions, he possesses a deeply caring and noble spirit. Tenya consistently puts the safety of his friends above his own ambitions, readily acknowledges his personal flaws, and holds himself to the highest moral standards.
Abilities
Tenya Iida possesses the Quirk Engine, which manifests as physical exhaust pipes in his calves that grant him superhuman speed and powerful kicks. He can switch between gears to adjust his velocity. His Quirk relies on pure orange juice as fuel, whereas carbonated drinks, high temperatures, or blocked exhaust vents cause his engines to stall. His special techniques include Recipro Burst, which grants a temporary explosion of extreme speed followed by a brief stall, Recipro Extend for devastating boosted kicks, and Recipro Turbo, a technique developed through grueling training that allows him to sustain top speed for ten minutes.
Background
Born as the second son of the renowned Iida hero family, Tenya grew up idolizing his older brother, Tensei Iida, who operated as the professional hero Ingenium. After graduating from Somei Private Academy, he entered U.A. High School and became the class representative of Class 1-A. During the U.A. Sports Festival, his brother was brutally attacked and paralyzed by the Hero Killer Stain. Driven by anger, Tenya sought revenge during his work study in Hosu City. After being rescued by Izuku Midoriya and Shoto Todoroki, Tenya recognized the error of his vengeful motives and vowed to honorably inherit his brother's hero name, Ingenium.
Relationships
Tenya Iida deeply idolizes his older brother, Tensei Iida, and carries on his legacy by adopting his hero name. He maintains a close bond of trust and mutual respect with Izuku Midoriya, Shoto Todoroki, and Ochaco Uraraka, having braved life-threatening battles alongside them. He views Izuku Midoriya as both a dear friend and a key rival. As class representative, he displays complete respect toward his homeroom teacher, Shota Aizawa, while tirelessly attending to the needs and well-being of all his Class 1-A classmates.
Trivia
Tenya Iida's name is derived from Idaten, the Mahayana Buddhist guardian deity renowned for swift running. While he usually adopts a casual masculine pronoun in everyday speech, his polite family upbringing causes him to revert to more formal speech when startled or flustered. In the manga, his dialogue bubbles are rendered with straight, squared edges to mirror his rigid personality. His room in the school dormitories features a bookshelf packed with numerous spare pairs of glasses.
