Overview
Hitoshi Shinso is a character from the manga and anime series My Hero Academia. Introduced as a student in Class 1-C of the General Department at U.A. High School, he harbors a deep ambition to become a professional hero despite failing the initial Hero Course entrance examination due to the nature of his ability. Driven by absolute determination, he works relentlessly to prove his potential during school competitions and practical exercises. Recognized for his tactical brilliance, Shinso eventually earns a official transfer into the Hero Course, later embarking on his professional career under the hero name Hypnosis Hero: Nighthide.
Appearance
Hitoshi Shinso is defined by his messy, upright purple hair, purple eyes, and prominent dark circles under his eyes. In addition to long-sleeved athletic attire, pants, and black gloves, his design features specialized gear. He wraps heavy binding cloth around his neck and wears a metallic voice-modulating mask called Persona Chord over his lower face. In his later hero career, he styles his hair downward in a manner reminiscent of his mentor.
Personality
Hitoshi Shinso possesses a stoic, detached, and sarcastic demeanor, often appearing gloomy or aloof. Having spent years enduring prejudice from peers who viewed his ability as sinister or ideal for villainy, he developed a defensive cynicism and a deep complex. Beneath his guarded exterior, however, lies an unyielding dedication to proving that his power can save lives. He approaches his ambitions with relentless seriousness, using clever tactics to overcome disadvantages. Outside of training, he has a quiet fondness for cats and cycling.
Abilities
Hitoshi Shinso's Quirk is Brainwashing, which allows him to mentally control anyone who verbally responds to a statement or question he directs at them, provided he consciously intends to activate it. Controlled targets lose physical autonomy and follow basic commands. The effect breaks upon a physical impact or manual cancellation. Because his Quirk does not travel through electronic audio equipment, he utilizes a non-electronic voice-modulating mask called Persona Chord to mimic others and draw responses from targets. To compensate for his low physical combat power, he wields a specialized binding cloth taught by Shota Aizawa to capture foes and maneuver across terrain.
Background
Originally from Saitama Prefecture and a graduate of Nabu Middle School, Hitoshi Shinso aspired to be a hero from childhood. However, because U.A. High School's practical entrance exam favored physical destruction against artificial targets, his non-damaging Quirk resulted in his assignment to Class 1-C of the General Department. Refusing to give up, Shinso utilized the U.A. Sports Festival to demonstrate his capabilities, advancing to the tournament stage against Izuku Midoriya. His impressive performance earned the backing of the faculty. Under Shota Aizawa's guidance, he developed his combat technique, excelled in a joint training simulation, and secured his transfer to the Hero Course.
Relationships
Shota Aizawa serves as Shinso's mentor, recognizing their shared tactical combat style and training him in binding cloth techniques. Izuku Midoriya became his key rival during the Sports Festival tournament; despite losing to Midoriya, Shinso earned his respect and later assisted in calming Midoriya's out-of-control ability during joint training. During the U.A. Sports Festival, Shinso controlled Mashirao Ojiro, Yuga Aoyama, and Nirengeki Shoda to win the cavalry battle. He also teamed up with Neito Monoma during class training exercises and later utilized Yuga Aoyama as a decoy in a battle strategy against All For One.
Trivia
Creator Kohei Horikoshi conceived Shinso while reflecting on how people naturally imagine criminal applications when contemplating mind-control powers. During the U.A. Cultural Festival, Shinso's class, 1-C, hosted a haunted house attraction titled Shinrei Meikyu. His performance at the Sports Festival highlighted structural issues in U.A. High School's entrance examination, prompting the school to revise its practical testing methods for future applicants with non-combat Quirks. As a professional hero, Shinso operates as an underground hero akin to his mentor, intentionally avoiding public publicity and hero chart rankings.
