Overview

Broly is a Saiyan warrior who serves as a major antagonist and dual protagonist in the animated film Dragon Ball Super: Broly, while also making an appearance in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Redesigned by original creator Akira Toriyama to integrate into the official franchise canon, he is depicted as a gentle-hearted man who dislikes unnecessary conflict. However, he harbors extraordinary latent power that far exceeds ordinary limits, turning him into an uncontrollable berserker whenever his emotions overflow in battle.

Appearance

Broly has dark skin, spiky black hair with bangs covering his eyes, and a silver cylindrical collar around his neck. Prominent scars mark his left cheek, left chest, left shoulder, left upper arm, and abdomen. In his wild outfit, he wears a navy undersuit, navy wristbands, white boots, and a green fur pelt around his waist made from a creature's ear with light-green lining. His Frieza Force costume consists of a black and yellow-green battle jacket over a purple undersuit, gauntlets, and boots with white heels. During transformations, his appearance shifts dramatically: his Wrath form features upright black hair, golden eyes with dark eye contours, and a green aura; Super Saiyan brings pupil-less white eyes, yellow-green glowing hair, and lighter skin; while Super Saiyan Full Power leaves him topless, expanding his massive body to roughly three meters tall with soft green spiky hair.

Personality

Despite his pure Saiyan heritage, Broly possesses a naturally gentle and non-violent temperament. Raised strictly by his father Paragus as a weapon for revenge, he nevertheless holds deep affection for his father and refuses to tolerate bad remarks about him. Due to spending four decades in isolation on an uninhabited planet, he speaks in a stilted, hesitant manner and retains a childlike naivety. Around trusted allies, he can show warmth and exercise restraint when agitated. While he can enjoy pure, harmless combat for the sake of competition, overwhelming rage or transformation causes him to lose all self-control and rationality, transforming him into a terrifying berserker who indiscriminately destroys everything around him.

Abilities

Broly possesses an unmeasurable latent power that evolves at an astonishing rate during combat, allowing him to adapt rapidly and copy his opponents' techniques on the spot. Through his Wrath form, he channels the immense strength of the Great Ape while retaining human form, firing destructive energy beams from his mouth and matching Super Saiyan Blue. Upon awakening as a Super Saiyan, he unleashes devastating energy waves from his chest and widespread blast barrages, overwhelming Golden Frieza and forcing Son Goku and Prince Vegeta to combine into Gogeta. In his Full Power transformation, he exhibits extraordinary resilience and raw force, withstanding massive damage while pressuring Super Saiyan Gogeta to utilize Super Saiyan God SS.

Background

Broly was born on Planet Vegeta around the same time as Prince Vegeta. Exhibiting abnormal latent power that surpassed even the young prince, he was deemed a dangerous threat by King Vegeta and exiled to the desolate Asteroid Vampa. His father, Paragus, followed him to the hostile world, which was inhabited by giant ticks and massive beasts. After their spacecraft broke down, Broly spent 41 years stranded on Vampa, surviving the harsh climate while enduring grueling combat training from Paragus in preparation for vengeance against the royal bloodline. During his isolation, Broly befriended a giant creature named Ba, though Paragus severed the beast's ear to sever their connection. Broly's life changed dramatically when Frieza Force scouts Cheelai and Lemo detected their distress signal and rescued them.

Relationships

Broly maintains a deeply respectful relationship with his father, Paragus, remaining devoted to him despite being subjected to strict training and a shock collar. Frieza Force soldiers Cheelai and Lemo are his closest friends, having rescued him from Vampa and shown genuine empathy for his plight. Unlike previous depictions, his encounter with Son Goku is free from personal malice, characterized instead by intense combat between fellow Saiyans. He faces Prince Vegeta as the son of the king responsible for his exile. During his ultimate battle, he engages in a reality-bending clash against Gogeta, the powerful fusion of Son Goku and Prince Vegeta.

Trivia

Original creator Akira Toriyama redesigned Broly specifically for the official canon after learning about the character's immense global popularity from his editor. The green fur pelt tied around Broly's waist is actually the severed ear of Ba, a giant creature on Asteroid Vampa that became his very first friend, serving as a cherished keepsake of their lost friendship. To differentiate this version from the original 1990s film counterpart, official merchandise, figures, and video games often label him as Broly: BR.
