Cheelai

Overview

Cheelai is a character introduced in the animated feature films Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: SUPERHERO. She serves as a non-combatant female soldier within the reconstituted Frieza Force. Originally a space outlaw who stole a Galactic Patrol vessel, she joined Frieza's army to evade capture. Assigned to scour the universe for powerful recruits alongside her crewmate, she encounters the surviving Saiyans Paragus and Broly on a desolate planet, setting the story's main events into motion.

Appearance

Cheelai is a slender, toned humanoid alien with lime-green skin, short white hair, thin white eyebrows, and red-purple eyes. Her outfit consists of a purple tight bodysuit and spats beneath a green tube-top armor piece styled after traditional Frieza Force battle jackets. She wears white gloves featuring purple cuff rings, long purple socks, and white-and-green shoes. She carries a waist pouch on her hip, holds a specialized ray gun, and wears a foldable blue scouter over her ear capable of measuring battle power up to 100,000.

Personality

Cheelai is a spirited, tomboyish former delinquent who acts impulsively based on instinct rather than calculated foresight. Despite her rough demeanor and informal speech, she possesses a deeply compassionate nature and cannot stand by while others suffer. She demonstrates strong moral indignation toward cruel treatment, particularly objecting to Paragus using a shock collar to control his son. Cheelai is fiercely loyal to those she cares about, putting her own safety on the line to protect innocent lives.

Abilities

Cheelai is officially classified as a non-combatant who does not engage in hand-to-hand fighting. She is equipped with an advanced folding blue scouter designed to detect and measure combat power levels below 100,000. She carries and can effectively wield a specialized gun, which she used to hold up Frieza Force personnel. Additionally, she possesses sufficient piloting skills and resourcefulness to hijack a Galactic Patrol spaceship and successfully evade authorities across space.

Background

After stealing a ship from the Galactic Patrol, Cheelai enlisted in the Frieza Force to hide from her pursuers. Sent on a recruitment mission with the veteran soldier Lemo, she located Paragus and Broly on Asteroid Vampa and brought them to Frieza. Witnessing Paragus violently shock Broly with a control device, she stole and destroyed the remote. During the fierce battle on Earth, realizing Broly was in fatal danger from Gogeta, Cheelai held Frieza's technician at gunpoint to use the Dragon Balls. She summoned Shenron to teleport Broly safely back to Vampa. She then deserted the Frieza Force, eventually relocating to the planet of Beerus.

Relationships

Cheelai forms a profound bond with Broly, viewing him as a pure-hearted individual exploited by his father, and saves his life using the Dragon Balls. She maintains a close partnership with Lemo, her fellow non-combatant squadmate. Conversely, she despises Paragus for his cruel abuse of Broly. While she initially knew of Frieza only through rumors, she eventually flees his army. Upon moving to the realm of the God of Destruction Beerus, she unexpectedly earns his favor after he finds her appearance charming.

Trivia

Cheelai's name is derived from the fruit lychee. Series creator Akira Toriyama intentionally designed her as a non-fighting character to provide a fresh dynamic amidst the battle-heavy cast, while also aiming to draw a female character he personally found cute. She is the second named female Frieza Force soldier in the franchise after Fasha, but the first whose active duty and routine work inside Frieza's military are shown on screen.
