Zamasu is a central antagonist in the Future Trunks Arc of Dragon Ball Super. A member of the Shinjin race who served as the North Kai of Universe 10, he was chosen by the Supreme Kai Gowasu to train as his successor due to his exceptional combat prowess. Though initially presenting himself as a dedicated deity, he holds a deeply twisted sense of justice and extreme contempt for mortal lifeforms, whom he views as foolish and violent. Driven by the conviction that gods alone should govern a spotless cosmos, he orchestrates the Zero Mortal Plan to systematically eradicate all mortals across timelines.

Appearance

Zamasu has light green skin, pointed ears, grey eyes, and white hair styled in a mohawk. As a Supreme Kai apprentice, he wears Potara earrings; his present-timeline self wears orange Potara on both ears, while his future counterpart wears a green Potara on his left ear. The alternate version who stole Son Goku's body wears a green Potara on his left ear and a Time Ring on his right index finger. In his fused form, he retains his green skin and white hair color combined with Goku Black's hairstyle, accompanied by a glowing halo behind his back.

Personality

Zamasu possesses an extremely fastidious temperament combined with a rigid, self-righteous morality. He views mortals with deep disdain, firmly believing that non-divine beings abuse the wisdom granted by the gods to pollute the universe with endless conflict. Immensely proud and deeply narcissistic, he refuses to acknowledge his own shortcomings or listen to opposing viewpoints, often engaging in self-intoxicating rants to justify his actions. When confronted with his flaws or defeats, he shifts the blame onto others rather than seeking self-improvement. Despite professing a love for natural beauty over mortal life, his righteous rhetoric hypocritically crumbles under pressure.

Zamasu possesses formidable martial arts talent that exceeds standard Kai capabilities, earning him a position as a Supreme Kai candidate. In the future timeline, he utilized the Super Dragon Balls to obtain an immortal body, rendering him completely immune to conventional physical damage. He can travel across time using the Time Ring and combine with his alternate self via Potara fusion. In his fused state, his combat prowess escalates to match Super Saiyan Blue Vegito. Furthermore, he exhibits extreme regenerative capabilities, able to replicate from severed flesh in the manga, or assimilate his conscious will directly into the timeline itself.

Background

Initially serving as the North Kai of Universe 10, Zamasu was chosen by Supreme Kai Gowasu as his apprentice. However, observing violent mortals and being defeated in a sparring session by Son Goku solidified his belief that mortals were an irredeemable blight. In the present timeline, his scheme to assassinate Gowasu and steal the Super Dragon Balls was thwarted when Whis rewound time, allowing Beerus to destroy him. In a parallel timeline, he successfully murdered Gowasu, stole Son Goku's body to become Goku Black, and traveled to Future Trunks's timeline. Joining forces with that era's Zamasu, he executed the Zero Mortal Plan to annihilate all mortal life and deities across the universe.

Relationships

Zamasu maintains a complex tie with his master, Supreme Kai Gowasu, initially acting obediently before betraying and murdering him over ideological rift. He harbors deep hatred for Son Goku, viewing the Saiyan's god-like power as an affront to divinity, leading an alternate self to hijack Goku's body. He targets Future Trunks as a sinner who violated temporal laws. Gods like Beerus and Whis investigate his suspicious aura, leading Beerus to destroy his present iteration. His strongest bond is with his alternate timeline self, Goku Black, whom he views as his sole true confidant, ultimately uniting with him through Potara fusion.

Zamasu's name evokes the traditional Japanese aristocratic speech ending, fitting his high-handed, arrogant demeanor. He represents a rare villain dynamic in the Dragon Ball franchise by effectively teaming up with an alternate version of himself from another timeline and eventually fusing together. His ideological motivation—driven by a distorted sense of divine justice rather than simple greed or conquest—distinguishes him from many of the series' traditional antagonists.
