Overview
A deity in the Dragon Ball series responsible for overseeing the North Galaxy. Residing on Kaiou-sei at the end of Snake Way in the Afterlife, he is commonly referred to simply as Kaiou or King Kai. He serves as an essential martial arts master to Son Goku and several other Z Fighters.
Appearance
He possesses blue skin and a rounded, chubby body frame. His face features a loach-like mustache, and two cockroach-like antennae extend from his head. He routinely wears round sunglasses.
Personality
Despite his elevated divine position, he does not put on airs and has a lighthearted, comical temperament. He loves terrible puns and forces prospective students to make him laugh before training them. He often finds himself stressed by Son Goku's unpredictable actions, particularly when his prized automobile is damaged.
Abilities
He can manipulate and float objects like bricks through telekinesis and observe distant locations using his antennae. His primary spatial ability is universe-spanning telepathy, allowing instant zero-lag communication with individuals or masses using himself as a conduit. He created the power-multiplying Kaio-ken and the Spirit Bomb (Genki Dama), which gathers life energy into a destructive sphere, though he was never able to fully master them himself.
Background
He dwells on the high-gravity Kaiou-sei alongside his companions, Bubbles the monkey and Gregory the cricket. After Son Goku died against Raditz, he trained Goku on his planet, equipping him with the Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb. He later trained Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo. During the Cell Games, Goku teleported a self-destructing Cell to his planet, killing Kaiou, though he continues to live and manage affairs on Kaiou-sei as a deceased deity.
Relationships
He shares a close mentor-student bond with Son Goku, though Goku frequently causes him distress through reckless behavior. He also takes Yamcha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo under his tutelage. On his planet, he lives with his animal companions, Bubbles and Gregory.
Trivia
His primary hobby is driving around his small planet in his personal car. In the video game Dragon Ball Kai: Ultimate Butouden, he appears as a fully playable fighter, utilizing his car as a high-powered attack move.
