Overview

Gine is a female Saiyan character from the Dragon Ball franchise. She is the wife of Bardock and the biological mother of Son Goku (Kakarot) and Raditz. Unlike the majority of her warrior race, who are defined by ruthlessness and a desire for conflict, Gine possesses an exceptionally gentle nature. First introduced in the manga chapter Dragon Ball Minus: The Departure of the Fated Child included in Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, she later appeared in the animated feature film Dragon Ball Super: Broly as well as multiple video games.

Appearance

Gine is characterized by her slanted, cat-like eyes and messy, semi-long black hair. Due to the biological trait of Saiyans aging slowly to maintain fighting capability, she retains a youthful look despite being a mother of two. She wears an old-model combat armor featuring shoulder straps and a skirt-like lower portion, along with white gloves. Unlike most Saiyans who wrap their tail around their waist, her tail hangs freely behind her. Her outfit's color scheme varied across early games and figures—ranging from black to pink—before being standardized to match Bardock's modern armor in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.

Personality

Gine possesses a remarkably mild and gentle temperament, standing out as a rare exception among the naturally violent Saiyan race. Lacking the aggressive instincts typical of her people, she found herself ill-suited for battlefield slaughter. She harbors immense affection for her family, deeply caring for both her husband and her children. When Bardock resolved to send infant Kakarot off-planet away from Frieza's impending threat, Gine initially voiced strong opposition and advocated for the entire family to flee together, demonstrating her devotion as a loving mother.

Abilities

Gine originally served as a front-line combatant in a four-person squad alongside Bardock. As noted in the novelization of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, both she and her husband possessed high battle power relative to average Saiyans. However, owing to her non-violent nature, she stepped down from active combat duties to work at Planet Vegeta's meat distribution facility. In Dragon Ball Fusions, she can be included in active battle parties, providing support abilities and performing an EX Fusion with Towa to become Towane. In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, she offers powerful damage-boosting support skills, and her movie variation (Gine: BR) acts as an active Elite-type fighter.

Background

In her early life, Gine fought on the front lines within a squad led by Bardock. After being saved by him on dangerous missions, a romantic bond developed between them. Recognizing her unsuitability for combat, she retired from fighting and took up employment at Planet Vegeta's meat supply facility. Upon Bardock's return following Frieza's recall order, he revealed his suspicions of Frieza's intentions and proposed launching their young son Kakarot away. Gine assisted her husband in boarding Kakarot into an escape pod under the cover of night, dispatching him toward Earth. She subsequently perished alongside her home planet when Frieza obliterated Planet Vegeta.

Relationships

Bardock is Gine's husband. Their relationship developed after he rescued her multiple times during combat missions, leading to a genuinely loving marriage that is extraordinarily rare among Saiyans. She passed down her gentle demeanor to her younger son, Son Goku (Kakarot), while her older son, Raditz, inherited her wild hair texture. She is also the grandmother of Son Gohan and Son Goten, the great-grandmother of Pan, and the mother-in-law of Chi-Chi. In Dragon Ball Fusions, she can fuse with Towa to form Towane, while in Super Dragon Ball Heroes World Mission, she temporarily allies with Shamel.

Trivia

Her name is derived from an anagram of negi, the Japanese word for spring onion. Created by series author Akira Toriyama, her persona was described in an interview before being visually depicted in a bonus chapter of Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. Because she did not appear in the original television special A Lonesome Final Battle, fan artwork often depicts her alongside the classic Bardock Squad members such as Fasha (Seripa). Additionally, her career at Planet Vegeta's meat distribution center has led fan artists to frequently portray her equipped with a large meat cleaver.
