Overview

Whis is a character from the Dragon Ball franchise created by Akira Toriyama, debuting in the film Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods and prominently featuring throughout Dragon Ball Super. He is an Angel who acts as both the personal attendant and martial arts master to Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7. Positioned as a serene and strictly neutral divine being, Whis possesses extraordinary strength that surpasses even the God of Destruction he serves, while maintaining a watchful and guiding presence over the universe.

Appearance

Whis has a tall, slender build with an androgynous, human-like countenance. He features light blue skin, purple eyes, and white hair that stands straight upward. Around his neck hovers a light blue ring-like halo. He wears dark maroon robes resembling sacred vestments and constantly holds a long, ornate staff topped with a floating orb.

Personality

Whis is remarkably polite, soft-spoken, and refined, consistently employing formal language while expressing subtle effeminate mannerisms. He remains unfailingly calm and unbothered even in chaotic situations. Whis possesses a lighthearted, playful streak and a passionate love for cuisine, particularly Earth's culinary delicacies like cup ramen and desserts, often accepting rare treats as payment for favors or training. Though dutiful to Beerus, he frequently acts as a dryly amused guardian who gently chides or restrains the hot-tempered God of Destruction.

Abilities

As Beerus's martial instructor, Whis possesses immense power, seamlessly utilizing Autonomous Ultra Instinct to dodge and deflect attacks effortlessly. Through his staff, he can project past or distant events, communicate across deep space, and store objects or seal individuals inside a special dimension. Whis can also manipulate time by executing a temporal rewind up to three minutes, fully resurrect the deceased, instantly synthesize matter from nothing, and travel across universes or parallel timelines at superluminal speeds.

Background

Having served as Universe 7's attendant Angel since ancient Mesozoic times, Whis is one of the many children of the Grand Priest. Under cosmic law, Angels must remain strictly neutral, forbidden from fighting in mortal conflicts or taking sides. Should the God of Destruction he serves perish, Whis enters a state of functional inactivity until a successor ascends. Over the course of the story, he takes Son Goku and Vegeta under his wing, training them on Beerus's planet to master divine ki and reach new levels of martial expertise.

Relationships

Whis serves Beerus, the God of Destruction of Universe 7, acting as his teacher and de facto handler who manages his outbursts. He is the son of the Grand Priest and the younger brother of Vados, the Angel of Universe 6, alongside other sibling Angels such as Merus. Whis also acts as a patient mentor to the Saiyan warriors Son Goku and Vegeta, guiding their combat development through rigorous training sessions.

Trivia

Whis's name is derived from the alcoholic beverage whiskey. As an Angel, he is immortal and immune to natural death or aging, only ceasing to exist if he violates the strict angelic law of neutrality. Despite sampling high-end gourmets across the cosmos, his absolute favorite food is humble Earth cup ramen. He has been a constant figure across modern Dragon Ball anime releases and video game adaptations.
