Overview

Jiren, also known as "Jiren the Grey," is a major character in Dragon Ball Super, serving as the primary formidable opponent during the Universe Survival Saga. He is a core member of the Pride Troopers, a peace-keeping hero force operating within Universe 11. Recognized as the absolute strongest fighter in his home universe, his immense prowess is said to reach and even exceed the level of a God of Destruction. Retaining a quiet, solitary demeanor, Jiren represents the ultimate wall for Universe 7's warriors during the multiverse-spanning Tournament of Power.

Appearance

Jiren resembles a classic "Grey" alien with grey skin and a massively muscular, heavily built physique. He possesses large eyes containing distinct irises. His standard attire is the Pride Troopers uniform, consisting of a black and red bodysuit paired with white gloves and white boots. When unleashing his full latent power, his upper outfit is torn off, his musculature expands dramatically, and he becomes enveloped in a scorching red aura.

Personality

Jiren is a silent, stoic individual who rarely expresses emotion. Shaped by a tragic past in which his family and master were killed and his peers abandoned him, he lives by the unyielding philosophy that strength is absolute and justice itself. He views trust and bonds as meaningless vulnerabilities, maintaining a cold, blunt attitude toward everyone, including superiors and deities. Jiren avoids engaging weak opponents unnecessarily, yet he accords respect to warriors who uphold their beliefs while striving for power. However, triggering his trauma drives him into a fury, where he ruthlessly enforces his ideology through sheer force.

Abilities

Jiren possesses fighting strength that rivals or surpasses Gods of Destruction. He projects a dense barrier of ki around his body that repels incoming attacks, allowing him to block powerful strikes with a single finger. By emitting intense shockwaves from his punches or eyes, he can neutralize energy attacks and maneuver through the air even when flight is restricted. His combat style conserves energy by relaxing his muscles and releasing massive power only at the moment of impact. His signature techniques include high-output red energy blasts, compressed energy spheres, and light-speed rushes.

Background

In his youth, Jiren's peaceful village and family were destroyed by a powerful evil entity. Saved by a martial arts master, Jiren dedicated himself to training alongside fellow students to pursue justice and strength. However, the evil attacker returned, killing his master and many companions. When the remaining disciples refused to fight back and abandoned their path out of fear, Jiren felt deeply betrayed. Concluding that trust in others is meaningless and that strength alone is absolute, he cast aside emotion to hone his power. He eventually joined Universe 11's Pride Troopers and gained the recognition of the God of Destruction Belmod, later entering the Tournament of Power to claim a wish on the Super Dragon Balls.

Relationships

Jiren maintains a distant, equal-footing relationship with Belmod, the God of Destruction of Universe 11, who fully acknowledges Jiren's unmatched power. Within the Pride Troopers, he works alongside Toppo and Dyspo, though he rejects camaraderie and treats them with cool detachment. The death of his martial arts master formed the bedrock of his obsession with absolute power. During the Tournament of Power, Son Goku becomes his greatest opponent; Goku's ability to achieve Ultra Instinct through his trust in his companions directly clashes with Jiren's solitary ideology.

Trivia

Jiren's name is derived from an anagram of the Japanese word for microwave oven, "renji." His physical design is modeled after the archetypal "Grey" alien commonly depicted in science fiction. In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Vegeta offers an in-universe analysis of Jiren's strength, noting that his raw power was not drastically higher than theirs, but rather his seamless ability to keep his body entirely relaxed until the exact instant of striking allowed him to attack with maximum efficiency while conserving stamina.
