Nappa

Overview

Nappa is a Saiyan warrior from the manga and anime series Dragon Ball. As one of the few Saiyans who survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta, he serves as an elite subordinate and traveling partner to Prince Vegeta. Proud of his noble lineage among his people, he accompanies Vegeta to Earth in search of the Dragon Balls, acting as a formidable early antagonist against Earth's defenders.

Appearance

Nappa is a tall, heavily muscular man with dark skin, a shaved head, and a distinctive arch-shaped mustache. He possesses a monkey tail wrapped around his waist and wears a technological scouter over his left eye. His combat attire consists of classic Frieza Force armor featuring dark blue body armor with gold shoulder guards, matching wrist gauntlets, and boots. In his younger years, he possessed hair on his head.

Personality

Nappa is hot-tempered, ruthless, and arrogant, holding immense pride in his elite status. He delights in destruction and looks down on weaker opponents. Despite his violent demeanor, he shows strict obedience toward Vegeta, though his lack of emotional control and impulsiveness frequently frustrate his master. While occasionally exhibiting subtle moments of camaraderie toward fellow Saiyans, he ultimately holds little true regard for fallen allies.

Abilities

With an official power level around 4,000, Nappa boasts exceptional physical strength and extraordinary durability, surviving self-destruct attacks and powerful energy blasts with minimal damage. His signature techniques include Giant Storm, triggered by raising two fingers to create massive explosions capable of wiping out whole cities; Arm Crash, a high-speed charge that severs limbs; Deluxe Bomber; and Break Cannon, a devastating energy beam fired directly from his mouth.

Background

Originating from a high-ranking family on Planet Vegeta, Nappa served the Royal Family before his homeworld was destroyed by Frieza. Having been away on an off-world mission during the cataclysm, he escaped death along with Vegeta and Raditz. Upon learning about the wish-granting Dragon Balls following Raditz's death on Earth, he traveled to the planet to claim them. After devastating Earth's defenders, he was utterly paralyzed in battle by a newly empowered Son Goku and subsequently executed by Vegeta for his failure.

Relationships

Nappa serves under Prince Vegeta as a loyal partner and bodyguard from childhood, though Vegeta ultimately destroys him after Nappa is rendered immobile in battle. He looked down on Raditz for his lower strength yet retained a minor sense of comradeship with him. In battle on Earth, Nappa acts as a terrifying opponent to Piccolo, Tien Shinhan, Chiaotzu, Yamcha, and Son Gohan, directly causing several of their deaths before being humbled by Son Goku.

Trivia

Although pure-blooded Saiyans are stated to maintain unchanged hair from birth, series creator Akira Toriyama clarified that Nappa's baldness is simply the result of going bald rather than a genetic trait. In video games, his dramatic town-destroying two-finger blast motion is widely featured, and he is frequently paired alongside the Saibamen in combat rosters.
