Overview
Porunga is the wish-granting dragon god of Planet Namek who appears throughout the Dragon Ball franchise, originating in Dragon Ball Z. Translating to God of Dreams in the Namekian tongue, he serves as the original foundation upon which Earth's Shenron was modeled. Summoned by gathering the massive Namekian Dragon Balls, Porunga acts as a crucial ultimate resort for the heroes, fulfilling pivotal wishes across numerous sagas.
Appearance
Unlike Earth's serpentine Shenron, Porunga features a heavily muscular humanoid upper body paired with a crocodilian jaw, giving him an appearance akin to a naga or lamp genie. He possesses a total of four horns divided between his temples and the back of his head, spiked shoulders, fish-like dorsal fins along his back, and the signature antennae of a Namekian. He has red eyes, scaled green skin, sharp fingernails, and a body significantly larger than that of Earth's dragon god.
Personality
Despite his intimidating and monstrous physique, Porunga exhibits a relatively casual, accommodating, and easygoing demeanor compared to the stern Shenron. He occasionally flashes a quick hand signal when confirming a request and demonstrates a playful generosity, such as voluntarily restoring Krillin's battle armor back to pristine condition as a special bonus upon reviving him.
Abilities
Porunga requires all invocation incantations and wishes to be spoken entirely in the Namekian language. He can grant up to three wishes per summoning and possesses the unique advantage of fulfilling the exact same request multiple times. His standard cooldown period between uses is only four months. Although initially constrained to reviving only a single individual per wish, his power was later upgraded to accommodate mass resurrections.
Background
Created by the Grand Elder Guru of Planet Namek and later maintained by Elder Moori, Porunga played a vital role during the battle against Frieza, reviving Piccolo and evacuating the inhabitants to Earth. In the Majin Buu arc, he provided critical assistance by restoring the destroyed Earth, resurrecting its population, and fully restoring Goku's energy.
Relationships
Porunga is bound to the lineage of Namekian Grand Elders, created by Guru and later sustained by Moori. He communicates primarily through Dende, who translates the requests of allies such as Son Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, and Bulma to grant their wishes during dire situations.
Trivia
In certain international releases and early secondary materials, he has been referred to by alternate titles such as Poporunga or the Infinite Dragon of Namek. Series creator Akira Toriyama noted that he had completely forgotten the original naming inspiration behind the character.
