Overview
Tapion is a central character featured in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon. Originating from Planet Konats in the Southern Galaxy, he is celebrated as a legendary hero who played a pivotal role in subduing and sealing away the phantom demon Hirudegarn.
Appearance
Tapion features a distinct reddish-orange mohawk hairstyle, pointed ears, and pinkish skin tone. His attire bears a strong resemblance to that of a Supreme Kai. On his person, he carries a legendary sword strapped to his back and a mystical flute.
Personality
Driven by a profound sense of responsibility, Tapion initially isolates himself and acts distantly toward others to prevent the seal within him from being compromised. Beneath this guarded exterior lies a compassionate and selfless warrior. He harbors a deeply caring nature, warming up to Trunks after seeing a resemblance to his deceased younger sibling.
Abilities
By playing his divine flute, Tapion can manipulate a powerful barrier capable of easily deflecting massive fire attacks and suppressing the phantom demon contained inside him. Even while exerting immense energy to maintain control over the creature, he demonstrates the capability to briefly hold down the fully formed entity on his own. He also wields his signature sword.
Background
A millennium ago, Tapion and his younger brother Minotia sealed the severed halves of Hirudegarn within their respective bodies before being placed inside musical boxes and sent into different galaxies. Resurrected on Earth in the modern era when his seal is broken via the Dragon Balls, he fights against the tragedy orchestrated by the wizard Hoi. After the battle comes to an end, he uses a time machine to return to the past, leaving his blade with Trunks.
Relationships
Tapion had a younger brother named Minotia, who fell victim to the wizard Hoi when his half of the seal was undone. On Earth, he forms a warm bond with Trunks, eventually bequeathing his sword to the boy. In game appearances such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, he meets alternate versions of Trunks, praising his growth and fighting alongside him.
Trivia
His name is derived from the word tapioca, as noted in character design memos by Akira Toriyama. His visual design shares noticeable stylistic similarities with Crono, the protagonist of Chrono Trigger. The melody played on his flute serves as his recognizable theme music.
