Overview

Gotenks is a fused warrior from the Dragon Ball series, created when Son Goten and Trunks perform the Metamoran Fusion Dance. He was introduced during the Majin Buu arc as a trump card to defeat the titular villain under the guidance of Son Goku and Piccolo. Combining the immense power and natural talents of both young Saiyan hybrids, Gotenks possesses tremendous battle potential, though he also inherits their youthful immaturity and boundless overconfidence.

Appearance

Gotenks has a dual-colored spiky hairstyle featuring Son Goten's black hair in the center flanked by Trunks's blue hair on the sides. He wears traditional Metamoran attire consisting of a dark vest trimmed with yellow padding, loose white pants, and a blue sash. When ascending to Super Saiyan 3, his eyebrows disappear, and his golden hair lengthens dramatically down to his lower legs.

Personality

Gotenks personality fuses the proudest and most arrogant traits of Son Goten and Trunks. Highly boastful and incredibly cocky, he regularly dubs himself a righteous savior and treats life-or-death battles like dramatic playground games, much to the exasperation of his mentor, Piccolo. His severe overconfidence often causes him to waste precious time showing off, though he becomes fiercely determined when pushed into a corner or driven by anger.

Abilities

Gotenks commands massive powers far eclipsing the individual components of his fusion, achieving the rare Super Saiyan 3 transformation after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. His arsenal consists of imaginative techniques, including the Galactic Donut to bind foes, the Continuous Die Die Missile for rapid bombardment, and the Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, which creates sentient, explosive ghost clones from his mouth. He also uses the Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball attack to spike bound enemies. His fusion lasts 30 minutes, though Super Saiyan 3 reduces this to roughly 5 minutes due to extreme energy consumption.

Background

Created as the final hope against Majin Buu, Gotenks was formed after Son Goten and Trunks learned the Fusion Dance. Following initial failures that produced failed fat and emaciated forms, they mastered the technique and trained inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber under Piccolo's instruction. Unlocking Super Saiyan 3, Gotenks fought a fierce battle against Super Buu, gaining the upper hand with his overwhelming techniques. However, his theatrical antics and the sudden expiration of his transformation prevented a decisive victory, leading to his eventual absorption by Buu before being rescued later.

Relationships

Gotenks is the direct fused entity of Son Goten and Trunks, possessing their combined traits and memories. Piccolo serves as his pragmatic trainer and chaperone, constantly scolding the fused warrior for his foolish behavior and wasted opportunities during battle. His primary nemesis is Majin Buu, who targeted Gotenks to absorb his immense power alongside Piccolo's intellect. He also shares familial ties with Son Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the Dragon Team, occasionally copying techniques from senior martial artists like Tien Shinhan.

Trivia

The name Gotenks is a portmanteau of Goten and Trunks, suggested by Chi-Chi along with the unused alternative name Tranten. His signature voice effect was achieved by having voice actors Masako Nozawa and Takeshi Kusao speak simultaneously, a technique that established the standard for subsequent fusion characters in the franchise like Gogeta and Vegito. Beyond his standard form, Gotenks has various alternate versions across media, including his failed physical fusions, an adult form, and a Time Patrol version designated as Gotenks: Xeno.
