Overview

Paragus is a surviving Saiyan from the Dragon Ball animated film series, featured as a central antagonist in Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan. As the biological father of Broly, he harbors a deep revenge against the Saiyan royal family alongside ambitions of cosmic conquest, orchestrating a deception to trap Son Goku and his allies.

Appearance

He is a middle-aged man with spiky black hair, a mustache, dark skin, and a muscular physique covered in scars. His most defining physical trait is a prominent scar over his left eye, which was crushed by Broly. He stands taller than Son Goku. He wears a unique set of Saiyan armor featuring distinct shoulder guards, lower armor flaps, and an unusual color combination of red, green, black, and purple, draped with a white cape. Underneath the cape on his right hand, he wears a cross-ring control device. In youthful flashbacks, he lacks a mustache, possesses an intact left eye, and does not wear the white cape.

Personality

Unlike typical boisterous Saiyans, he projects a polite and gentlemanly demeanor, treating royalty and fighters from Earth with courtesy. Beneath this facade lies a cold and calculating ambitious mind, willing to execute subordinates and subjugate his own son with a controlling ring. However, he also exhibits rare paternal affection for a Saiyan, having desperately begged for his infant son's life before King Vegeta and choosing to manage Broly's rampages for years rather than abandoning him.

Abilities

He rarely engages in direct combat, relying primarily on a remote device constructed by scientists to contain and command his son's vast power. His only shown attack in the film is a powerful energy wave used to eliminate his subordinate Moa, which is designated in video games as the special technique Dead Punisher.

Background

Fearing infant Broly's terrifying latent power, King Vegeta ordered both father and son executed, leaving them critically wounded. They survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta thanks to Broly's protective barrier. As Broly grew unmanageable, Paragus lost his left eye before subduing him with a remote control device built by scientists. He established New Planet Vegeta to trap Vegeta and destroy him via the approaching Gumori Comet. However, Son Goku's intervention caused Broly to shatter the control ring, ruining the plot and leading to Paragus being crushed inside an escape pod by his son and thrown into the comet.

Relationships

He is the biological father of Broly, utilizing him as a weapon for universe conquest while maintaining a lingering parental bond. He carries an intense hatred for King Vegeta due to the past execution order, extending his vengeance toward King Vegeta's son Vegeta and grandson Trunks. He was also familiar with Bardock, recognizing Son Goku as Bardock's son upon their meeting.

Trivia

His name is derived from the vegetable asparagus. Scriptwriter Takao Koyama noted his age as being in his late 40s during the events of the movie. His shift from polite formality to villainy, alongside his ironic death being crushed inside a small escape pod by his own son, remains widely recognized among fans. He also appears as a playable raider component in asymmetric action titles such as Dragon Ball: The Breakers.
