Overview

Pan is a character from the Dragon Ball series created by Akira Toriyama. She is the daughter of Son Gohan and Videl, making her a quarter-Saiyan with Son Goku and Mr. Satan as her grandfathers. First introduced at four years old near the conclusion of the original story, she later serves as a main heroine during the galactic journey in Dragon Ball GT and plays a pivotal role in animated films such as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero.

Appearance

Pan has black hair and black eyes inherited from her father Son Gohan. At three years old, she sports a short bob cut similar to her father's childhood hairstyle, while at the age of four during the martial arts tournament, she wears a traditional gi styled after Son Goku's youth. In Dragon Ball GT, her appearance features an orange bandana, a short red crop top, white shorts, a belt, and black fingerless gloves. In her elderly years at age 110, her hair turns white with visible wrinkles on her face.

Personality

Pan inherits a fiery, high-spirited, and stubborn temperament from her mother Videl and grandmother Chi-Chi. Driven by a strong sense of justice and proactive energy, she interacts with older allies like Trunks without hesitation. However, her powerful martial capabilities often intimidate boys her age, causing her distress when potential dates flee. Despite her headstrong behavior, she harbors deep affection and respect for both of her grandfathers, Son Goku and Mr. Satan.

Abilities

Pan possesses remarkable martial arts potential from an early age, easily overpowering grown opponents like Mokkekko at just four years old. Trained by Son Goku and Piccolo, she demonstrates enough physical strength at age three to knock out adult men with a single strike. Although she initially struggled with intentional flight during early childhood, she eventually masters the Bukujutsu technique. Despite her Saiyan heritage, she does not achieve the Super Saiyan form, yet retains exceptional physical stamina even in her old age.

Background

Born in Age 779, Pan enters the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament four years later, demonstrating remarkable skill among adult competitors. In Dragon Ball GT, she stows away on a spaceship intended for Son Goten, venturing into the cosmos alongside Son Goku and Trunks to recover the Ultimate Dragon Balls. During this journey, she helps restore Goku's sanity while he is in his Golden Great Ape state. Over a century later, she remains alive to care for her descendant Son Goku Jr. In Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, her staged abduction by Piccolo serves as the key trigger to unlock Son Gohan's latent powers.

Relationships

Pan is raised with deep affection by her parents, Son Gohan and Videl. She shares warm bonds with her grandfathers, receiving martial arts instruction from Son Goku while being thoroughly spoiled by Mr. Satan. She looks up to Piccolo as a trusted mentor from a very young age, and travels through space alongside Trunks and the robot Giru during her galactic journey. In the distant future, she acts as a stern yet loving guardian to her great-great-grandson, Son Goku Jr.

Trivia

Her name carries a dual pun, referencing both the staple food 'pan' (bread) to match her father Son Gohan's name, as well as the Greek deity Pan to align with the demonic theme of Mr. Satan and Videl's side of the family. Production reasoning for Dragon Ball GT kept her from transforming into a Super Saiyan in order to preserve a classic dynamic where Son Goku comes to her rescue during moments of crisis.
