Appearance
Future Trunks shares his father's intense gaze and has blue eyes with straight hair styled in a center-parted undercut, featuring two distinct strands at his hairline. His hair color is light purple in the Z anime adaptions, but blue in the Super anime. His classic attire consists of a blue denim jacket with the Capsule Corporation logo over a black tank top, complemented by a large sword slung across his back. During his training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, his hair grows long enough to be tied back, and he changes into Saiyan armor.
Personality
Growing up in a desolate apocalyptic world shaped Trunks into a deeply polite, humble, and serious young man. He speaks respectfully using formal language with allies. In battle, he is completely pragmatic and ruthless, lacking the arrogance or playfulness of other Saiyans, opting to finish off opponents swiftly without letting his guard down. The heavy burdens he carries also give him a solemn, slightly pessimistic aura.
Abilities
Trunks possesses the ability to transform into a Super Saiyan, along with advanced forms such as Super Saiyan Grade 3 and Super Saiyan 2. In Dragon Ball Super, he achieves a distinct form radiating a dual blue-and-gold aura. He is an exceptionally skilled swordsman who wields a massive broadsword, famously using the Sword of Hope technique by gathering the energy of living beings into his blade. He is also capable of performing the Mafuba (Evil Containment Wave).
Background
Born in Age 766 in a dark future where Goku succumbed to a heart disease and the Z-Fighters were killed by the Androids, Trunks was trained by Future Gohan. After his mentor fell, Trunks became the earth's final defender and used a time machine built by Bulma to travel to the past, eliminating Frieza and warning Goku of the coming threat while giving him medicine. After participating in the Cell Games and growing stronger, he returned to his timeline to destroy the Androids and Cell. Years later, he was forced to journey back to the present once again to seek help against Goku Black and Zamasu.
Relationships
He is the son of Vegeta and Bulma, representing a counterpart to his younger self living in the main timeline. He deeply reveres Future Gohan as his beloved master and brother figure, showing immense respect to the present Gohan as well. During the conflict against Goku Black, he shares a profound romantic bond and mutual trust with Future Mai, who leads the human resistance.
Trivia
While the origin of his broadsword is never explained in the original manga, the movie Wrath of the Dragon shows Kid Trunks receiving a similar sword from the hero Tapion. His striking character design and time-travel narrative were heavily inspired by Edward Furlong's portrayal of John Connor in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
