Overview

Shuu is a character from the Dragon Ball series and a member of the Pilaf Gang. Serving as a henchman to Emperor Pilaf, he is a dog-like animal-type Earthling. Although he exhibits more common sense than his leader, his inherent clumsiness frequently leads to comedic failures during their schemes.

Appearance

Shuu is an animal-type Earthling with the features of a dog, possessing a small physique comparable to young Son Goku. He wears ninja attire and carries a Japanese sword strapped to his back for self-defense. Following a wish made on the Dragon Balls, he often appears in a rejuvenated, child-like state, though in Dragon Ball GT he is shown as a frail, elderly dog.

Personality

Compared to Emperor Pilaf, Shuu possesses greater common sense and often voices hesitation or complaints when given unreasonable orders. Despite this, he is naturally clumsy and prone to errors, which frequently sabotages his efforts. Because his natural age had far surpassed the standard lifespan of a dog, he reacts with pure delight when turned young again by the Dragon Balls.

Abilities

Although dressed in ninja attire, Shuu does not possess the ability to perform actual ninjutsu. He carries a Japanese sword on his back primarily for self-defense. He is capable of stealth and impersonation, having once successfully infiltrated the Ox-King's banquet by disguising himself with a mask that resembled Son Goku.

Background

Shuu operates as part of Emperor Pilaf's triumvirate alongside Mai, pursuing dragon balls and global domination. Early in the story, he was stripped of his clothes by Son Goku and left completely naked, and later conducted espionage at the Ox-King's celebration. Although he disappeared from the original manga following the King Piccolo arc, he returned in anime releases and feature films. He was transformed into a child alongside his cohorts around the Androids and Cell arc due to a wish granted by the Dragon Balls.

Relationships

Shuu serves as a loyal henchman to Emperor Pilaf, though he routinely complains about his boss's demanding nature. He works closely with his partner Mai as an integral member of the Pilaf Gang. His interactions with Son Goku are marked by comic rivalry, including Goku taking his clothes and Shuu using a mask of Goku's face for covert operations.

Trivia

When he first appeared in the manga, he was named "Soba." Creator Akira Toriyama forgot this detail and renamed him "Shuu" upon his return, which became the standard name used in anime adaptations. While the Kanzenban manga release revised his name back to "Soba," newer animation projects retain "Shuu." Furthermore, combining his name with his partner Mai forms a pun on "shumai."
