Janemba

Overview

Janemba is the main antagonist of the anime film Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn. Born in the Other World, he was created when a vast accumulation of evil energy leaked from the Spirit Laundering Machine near Hell and possessed an ogre employee named Saike Demon. Initially appearing as a massive, child-like entity, he compresses into a sinister, powerful demon that threatens the order of both the living world and the afterlife. Utilizing unorthodox spatial magic and overwhelming strength, he pushes Son Goku and Vegeta to their limits.

Appearance

In his initial form, Janemba possesses a yellow-skinned, immensely corpulent, and massive body. Upon transforming, he compresses into a human-sized figure with a tall, lean, and muscular build. This evolved state features crimson skin, sharp purple horns on his head, pointed ears, a tail, black nails, and distinct vascular line patterns wrapping around his limbs.

Personality

In his initial state, Janemba exhibits a simple, child-like disposition, capable of speech only by repeating his own name. However, after transforming into Super Janemba, his personality becomes violent, crude, and ruthless. Although he ceases human speech and communicates solely through grunts and roars, he still displays emotional expressions such as sneering. In battle, he favors highly technical, unpredictable maneuvers to completely overwhelm his opponents.

Abilities

Janemba excels at reading his opponent's movements and ki. He uses spatial manipulation techniques such as decomposing his body into cubic fragments to teleport and strike while reassembling, or opening dimensional portals to redirect enemy ki blasts back at them from behind. He can transform ordinary objects like wooden clubs into sharp bladed weapons, fire razor-sharp light beams, stretch his arms to grab targets, and emit energy blasts from his mouth. However, hitting him mid-teleportation reveals his destination, verbal insults cause physical damage to him and his barriers, and he struggles to adapt to comical or unpredictable movements.

Background

Janemba was created when Saike Demon, an ogre managing the Spirit Laundering Machine in Hell, neglected his duties and was overwhelmed by a mass of purified evil energy. Upon his birth, Janemba trapped King Yemma's realm behind a barrier, causing chaos across the afterlife and the living world. Son Goku transformed into Super Saiyan 3 to dismantle Janemba's initial body, but the demon transformed into a far more dangerous form that defeated both Goku and Vegeta. Ultimately, with Paikuhan buying time, Goku and Vegeta completed the Fusion Dance into Gogeta, who purified Janemba with the Soul Punisher and restored Saike Demon to normal.

Relationships

Janemba fought Son Goku and Vegeta in the Other World, overpowering them in his transformed state until Vegeta uncovered the vulnerability in his teleportation. Paikuhan intervened by shouting insults, directly damaging Janemba's body and barriers to buy time. Janemba was initially confused by Veku, the failed fusion of Goku and Vegeta, due to his erratic movements, but was ultimately destroyed by the perfected fusion warrior Gogeta. Saike Demon regained consciousness after Janemba was purified and fled.

Trivia

Janemba's name is derived from a shortened phrase meaning 'evil mind wave'. Designed by animator Naoyoshi Yamamuro, his transformed state was praised by series creator Akira Toriyama for its sleek appearance and lively combat motion. Early concept art featured spiral vines wrapped around his limbs, which evolved into vascular lines in the final revision. In video games, he appears in alternate variants such as Janemba Baby and Janemba: Xeno.
