Hoolay

Overview

Hoolay is a character appearing in Honkai: Star Rail. As the former Warmaster and leader of the Borisin, a race among the Denizens of Abundance, he long enslaved the Foxians to refine medicine from their blood. Captured seven centuries ago by Jingliu of the High-Cloud Quintet, he was imprisoned at the deepest level of the Shackling Prison on the Xianzhou Luofu, enduring the Punishment of the Infinite Sword-Tree. Upon escaping, he turns his wrath once more against the Xianzhou Alliance.

Appearance

Hoolay possesses a massive wolf-like form featuring white hair, blue eyes, facial hair, wolf ears, sharp claws, and a highly muscular physique. During his covert movements following his escape, he also assumes a disguise taking the form of a young Foxian.

Personality

Hoolay is a fiercely violent yet highly charismatic leader who holds an unyielding belief in supreme strength, disdaining those who rely on others for protection. While relentless in his pursuit of warfare and revenge for his people, he exhibits respect toward adversaries who display fearless resolve, even as he moves to exploit them.

Abilities

Hoolay houses the heart of the Crimson Moon within his body, granting him extraordinary vitality that kept him alive through seven hundred years of continuous torment without food. In combat, he wields lightning-attribute attacks utilizing sharp claws and heavy blades. He can induce a Moon Rage state to empower himself and allies, summon wolf minions into battle, and emit a specialized wolf-toxin pheromone that instills intense terror in other species.

Background

Having united scattered packs and waged over two thousand invasive wars, Hoolay was ultimately defeated seven hundred years ago by Jingliu's ice blade. Rather than executed, he was cast into the Shackling Prison to face endless torment. Instigated by Phantylia and supported by infiltrators, he breaks out and hides within Exalting Sanctum while planning to seize the Skysplitter. In his final battle, weakened by ingesting poisoned blood, he is struck down by the very sword technique that once subdued him. Ripping out his Crimson Moon heart to infect Feixiao, he attempts to claim her body from within her mindscape, but is utterly destroyed.

Relationships

Jingliu is his sworn enemy who defeated and bound him seven centuries prior, leaving an indelible mark on his combat memory. He views Feixiao as the ultimate vessel to carry his lineage, attempting to subvert her body by forcing her to consume his heart. He holds Jiaoqiu captive and drinks his blood, secretly respecting the strategist's fearless demeanor. Though Phantylia assists his prison break under a false identity, Hoolay refuses to remain a mere pawn in her broader schemes.

Trivia

His name is associated with historic and literary references such as the legendary steed Hoolai (Hulei Bo). In high-difficulty game modes like Apocalyptic Shadow, he appears under the specialized title Fulminating Wolflord.
