Yao Guang

Overview

Yao Guang, also known as Madam Yao, is a playable character in Honkai: Star Rail. She serves as the Seer Strategist and one of the Seven Arbiter-Generals of the Xianzhou Alliance, commanding the Xianzhou Yuque. In gameplay, she aligns with the Path of Elation and wields the Physical element. Although she is an extraordinarily gifted diviner who can see into the future using calculation matrices, she is defined by her radical and audacious nature, often choosing to step into hazardous situations directly rather than relying solely on foresight.

Appearance

Yao Guang features long gradient white hair tied into a side ponytail, styled with M-shaped bangs and distinct intake-like locks. She has bright blue eyes and fair skin. Her attire is a sleeveless, high-slit two-tone dress with prominent peacock motifs, accessorized with peacock hair ornaments, earrings, armlets, bracelets, and rings. She wears high-heeled footwear and has painted nails.

Personality

Yao Guang is mysterious, bold, and fiercely adaptable. Despite being able to predict outcomes through divination, she actively seeks out hands-on experiences for the excitement of unforeseen variables. Possessing a playfully mischievous and shrewd temperament, she frequently embeds I Ching hexagram symbols as emojis in her communications. She maintains an easygoing and lighthearted demeanor around fellow generals, often bestowing lighthearted nicknames upon them.

Abilities

Yao Guang utilizes the Clairvoyant Eye to monitor distant universal events and deploys the Deca-Light Reflection Barrier to compute intricate cosmic equations and verify facts across long distances. She suffers from Synchronicity Dislocation due to a past calculation accident, causing involuntary short-range temporal jumps that are partially stabilized by her Heavenly Wisdom Jade Knot. In battle, she supports the team by boosting Elation damage and Elation Degree, providing area-of-effect Physical attacks, triggering extra turns for Aha, and granting bonus credits when breaking field objects.

Background

Yao Guang studied under Jingtian, the former Master Diviner of Yuque. As a staff general who works primarily behind the scenes, she spends her time calculating strategies and global affairs for the Marshal. Having held her position since the Third Abundance War thirty years ago, her physical appearances are rare due to both her secretive work and her time-jump condition. When Jingliu and Luocha surrendered themselves, she used her reflection array to unveil their scheme to slay Yaoshi and relayed her findings to the other Arbiter-Generals.

Relationships

Fu Xuan is Yao Guang's junior fellow disciple under Jingtian, whom Yao Guang playfully tries to recruit back to Yuque to share her workload. She shares a friendly rivalry in tactical wisdom with Jing Yuan, teasingly addressing him as the Optimistic General. She works alongside Feixiao, Hua, Huaiyan, Xuanquan, and Youwu as fellow Arbiter-Generals of the Xianzhou Alliance. Additionally, she scrutinized Jingliu and Luocha upon their surrender, divining the presence of Tayzzyronth's remains in Luocha's coffin and their connection to Ruan Mei.

Trivia

Yao Guang's name and her habit of using hexagram emojis originate from the I Ching (Book of Changes), referencing its constituent lines and commentary on hexagrams such as the 64th hexagram. Visual design and key art poses incorporate traditional Dai peacock dance movements. When Yao Guang is in the active party, breaking destructible objects drops special lucky envelopes containing credit amounts formatted in repeating digits of eight.
