The Herta

Overview

The Herta is a character in Honkai: Star Rail. She is Member #83 of the Genius Society and an Emanator of the Aeon of Erudition, Nous. As the true master of the Herta Space Station, she usually operates remotely through puppets crafted in the likeness of her younger self. To distinguish her real body from these puppets, she humorously adopted the title "The Herta" (referred to as "Madam Herta" in Japanese) over mundane alternative titles suggested by the Intelligentsia Guild. In-game, she is a 5-star Ice-attribute character following the Path of Erudition.

Appearance

She is a young woman with purple eyes, purple nails, and very long ash-brown hair with purple tips. She wears a black witch hat decorated with purple flowers and cross-shaped hair ornaments on her sidelocks. Around her neck, she has a black choker with a white ascot and a key necklace. Her outfit features a strapless black dress with long detached sleeves and grey pantyhose. Her footwear consists of asymmetrical purple-and-black gradient boots, with the right boot reaching knee-height and the left boot reaching ankle-height.

Personality

Fiercely proud and unapologetically self-centered, she is a self-proclaimed genius who focuses strictly on subjects that capture her curiosity, abandoning them as soon as she loses interest. Despite her haughty and unpredictable demeanor, she maintains a grounded moral compass, prioritizing human life over scientific experiments when lives are on the line. She shows a warmer, respectful side to those whose intellect she acknowledges, such as Chadwick and her junior Stephen Lloyd. However, she holds absolute self-respect and will mercilessly retaliate against anyone who dares to provoke or look down on her.

Abilities

She functions as an Ice-attribute area-of-effect damage dealer. Her combat kit revolves around applying and managing a stackable mark called "Interpretation" on enemies. Her Skill deploys a expanding kaleidoscope-like forcefield that strikes a primary target, adjacent foes, and all enemies. Her Ultimate buffs her Attack, redistributes "Interpretation" stacks to prioritize elite targets, and fires a massive beam at all enemies. Executing her Ultimate grants an immediate extra turn and a stack of "Sixth Sense," transforming her Skill into an enhanced 4-hit attack that deals devastating damage scaled by the target's "Interpretation" stacks.

Background

A legendary genius residing in the galactic fringe, she rarely makes personal appearances. Her lifetime of achievements includes solving complex equations in her youth, discovering Sigma particle conversion, formulating the Herta Sequence, and personally demonstrating reverse-aging technology in her later years. She mastered Imaginary energy, developed methods to seal Stellarons, and saved 19 planets from destruction. In the present day, while continuing projects like the Simulated Universe and leaving space station operations to Asta, she finally steps out in person after hearing news of the Astral Express embarking toward an uncharted destination.

Relationships

She co-developed the Simulated Universe alongside her fellow Genius Society members Ruan Mei, Screwllum, and Stephen Lloyd. She holds deep respect for her senior in the Society, Chadwick. She delegates the full administrative management of her space station to Asta. When Silver Wolf hacked her station, she delivered a prompt and severe retaliation. She also maintains working relationships and exchanges with the Astral Express, the Xianzhou, and the Interastral Peace Corporation.

Trivia

Despite her brilliant mind, she is notably clumsy with her hands, to the point where her attempts at cooking often cause catastrophic explosions involving Curios. Her localized title varies significantly by region; while known as "Madam Herta" in Japanese, she is titled "Da Heita" (Great Herta) in Chinese and "The Herta" in English. She is the first officially confirmed, fully playable Emanator released in the game.
