Yanqing

Overview

Yanqing is a playable character from Honkai: Star Rail who serves as a Lieutenant of the Cloud Knights on the Xianzhou Luofu and acts as the guard and disciple of General Jing Yuan. Raised from childhood by Jing Yuan, he is hailed as a martial prodigy with extraordinary sword talent, earning him the title of the Luofu's strongest swordsman despite his young age. He possesses a deep passion for swords, often naming his blades and treating them with care. Dedicated to serving the Cloud Knights and honoring his mentor's expectations, Yanqing strives to refine his martial art and protect the Xianzhou Alliance.

Appearance

Yanqing is a young boy with long blonde hair tied into a ponytail, featuring a prominent ahoge and curtain bangs, accompanied by yellow eyes. His outfit consists of a blue robe decorated with swallow motifs over a white shirt and white cropped trousers. He wears black fingerless vambraces on his forearms, a jingle bell attached to his left wrist, and pinned Cloud Knight badges on the left side of his chest. Additionally, he carries a turquoise bamboo flute at his waist and wears white ankle boots.

Personality

Yanqing is energetic, earnest, and deeply passionate about swordsmanship, often purchasing new blades and giving each one an affectionate name. Despite being recognized as a prodigy, he remains dedicated to honing his technique out of deep gratitude toward General Jing Yuan. He has a competitive streak, frequently bickering with his rival Yunli over their contrasting philosophies on weaponry. Though initially confident in his abilities, facing defeat against formidable martial masters causes him internal grief. Through these hardships and guidance from his master, Yanqing evolves beyond a simple desire for victory, learning the true purpose behind drawing his sword and displaying remarkable maturity.

Abilities

Yanqing is an Ice-element character on the Path of The Hunt, specializing in single-target damage by controlling multiple flying swords. His Combat Skill, Darting Swallow, grants him the Soulsteel Sync state, which enhances his Critical Rate and Critical Damage while enabling his Talent, One with the Sword, to launch follow-up attacks that can Freeze enemies. His Ultimate, Swallow's Plunge, delivers a powerful Ice attack boosted by substantial Critical buffs. However, Soulsteel Sync is removed if Yanqing receives damage, necessitating shielding allies to maintain his output. In story encounters, he demonstrates the technique to reform a broken blade using solid ice to pierce formidable foes.

Background

Raised from infancy by General Jing Yuan without knowledge of his birth parents, Yanqing received instruction in swordsmanship, strategy, and literature. In Star Calendar 8096, he placed first in the Divine Sight Hall martial examination and was promoted to Cloud Knight Lieutenant. During the crisis on the Luofu, he set out alone to pursue the escaped Stellaron Hunter Blade. Along the way, he encountered the former swordmaster Jingliu and suffered a complete defeat, followed by another loss against Blade and Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae. These defeats caused him to question his strength, leading to a temporary ordeal with the Heliobus Helios, which he overcame with Jing Yuan's guidance. During the Wardance ceremony, he co-tutored March 7th with Yunli, helped defeat the Borisin leader Hoolay, and ultimately emerged victorious in the tournament.

Relationships

Jing Yuan is Yanqing's adoptive father and revered mentor, whom Yanqing seeks to assist and repay for his upbringing. Jingliu, Jing Yuan's former master, demonstrated overwhelming skill against Yanqing during their encounter at Cloudford. Yunli is his rival from Xianzhou Zhuming; despite their frequent bickering over weapon philosophies, the two worked together as co-tutors to train March 7th in swordplay. During the Wardance, Yanqing gained deep respect for the contender Luka, putting down his weapon to fight him hand-to-hand after Luka's mechanical arm broke.

Trivia

Yanqing shares a parallel counterpart named Ma Yanqing in the visual novel Shenzhou Xihe Lu from Honkai Impact 3rd. During the events of the Wardance, he temporarily adopted the alias Cold Front when conversing with strangers. While a lighthearted rumor spread by Qingzu at the Divine Sight Hall alleged he was a long-life Vidyadhara whose ears were bitten by mice, Yanqing himself indicated to Luka that his age is quite close to that of short-life species.
