Overview

Axl RO is an antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run. Serving as an assassin under United States President Funny Valentine, he ambushes the protagonists during the seventh stage of the race in Gettysburg. A former soldier who served during the American Civil War, he carries profound guilt from his past while utilizing his Stand ability to claim the Holy Corpse.

Appearance

A middle-aged man in his forties or fifties, he features brown or white hair, purple eyes, and purple lips. Dark hook-like patterns and scattered dots mark his face below the eyes and across his cheeks. He wears a round military helmet covered in netting over a drooping cloth, paired with military-style outerwear. His wide-necked top includes four dark rectangular sleeve patches between the shoulder and elbow, accompanied by a V-shaped chest component with hanging square pieces and dark knee-length boots. His Stand visually resembles a slender robot with a head shaped like a transformed iron mask and plant-inspired feet.

Personality

He typically maintains a calm and collected demeanor, but he quickly loses his temper and resorts to harsh, aggressive language when pressed. Although he preaches a personal philosophy of fairness and offers information about his Stand's weakness to his enemies, he does so only when they cannot act upon it, exposing his self-serving nature. Deeply haunted by the trauma of abandoning his comrades and townspeople during the Civil War, he harbors a selfish urge to purge his guilt by forcing others to inherit his sins.

Abilities

He commands the Stand Civil War, which has no destructive power, C in speed, C in range, B in persistence, C in precision, and no growth potential. It forms a space that materializes an opponent's discarded items and past guilt to attack them. Touching these physical manifestations traps the victim inside a binding film, immobilizing them completely, though this effect can be cleansed with water. Furthermore, if a person is killed within its range, their guilt is transferred to their killer while the victim is restored to life. The Stand itself can disassemble its thin body into pieces to dodge enemy attacks.

Background

Aspiring to become a musician in his youth, he was instead drafted into the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. Sent to watchtower duty, he turned to drinking out of fear and fell asleep, allowing enemy forces to invade. Fearing for his life, he neglected to light the signal lamp, causing the total massacre of his comrades and local townspeople. Haunted by this remorse for roughly thirty years, he was sent by President Funny Valentine to Gettysburg to ambush Johnny Joestar, Gyro Zeppeli, and Hot Pants for the Holy Corpse. His scheme to pass his lifelong guilt onto Johnny by provoking his own death was ultimately thwarted, and he was mortally shot by Valentine from outside the Stand's range, dying of blood loss.

Relationships

He serves as a hired assassin under President Funny Valentine, following instructions to secure the Holy Corpse. In Gettysburg, he steals the Corpse's torso from Hot Pants and corners both Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli. He attempts to trick Johnny into taking on his personal sins by killing him, but Johnny turns the situation around. Ultimately, Axl is shot from afar by President Funny Valentine, who disposes of him purely to use his slow death as a stalling tactic.

Trivia

His name is based on Axl Rose, the lead singer of the rock band Guns N' Roses, while his Stand is named after their song "Civil War." Within the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure series, he holds the record of being the very first character explicitly noted to have died from blood loss. In media adaptations like the video game JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven, he is voiced by Taku Yashiro.
