Overview
Devo the Cursed is a minor antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. Employed by DIO as one of the seven assassins dispatched by Enya the Hag, he operates under the guise of a Native American shaman. Renowned in the underworld for executing high-profile political and corporate assassinations, Devo utilizes a deadly combat method centered on taking damage to fuel his intense hatred. This malice powers his remote-controlled Stand, allowing him to attack enemies using a possessed puppet while concealing his own physical location.
Appearance
Devo is a man with long black hair styled into braids, featuring gold eyes framed by dark circles and no visible eyebrows. He wears a dark vest on his upper body along with gloves. His most distinct visual trait is his entire body being covered in numerous scars, which were inflicted through combat to cultivate deep personal grudges against his targets.
Personality
Devo normally maintains a composed and cold demeanor fit for a professional hitman. However, once combat begins and he controls his Stand from afar, his demeanor shifts dramatically, becoming highly talkative, arrogant, and foul-mouthed. He takes malicious pleasure in tormenting his targets through sneaky tactics. Beneath this behavior lies a masochistic strategy of enduring harm to magnify his resentment, before returning to a cold-blooded assassin when moving in for the kill.
Abilities
Devo commands the remote-controlled Stand named Ebony Devil, tied to Tarot Card XV, The Devil. The Stand operates by possessing a wooden puppet and draws its strength directly from Devo's hatred toward his enemy. By intentionally allowing targets to injure his body, Devo amplifies his resentment, elevating Ebony Devil's combat power to a level comparable to close-range power-type Stands. He controls the puppet from a hidden location, surprising opponents with lethal weapons from their blind spots.
Background
Sent by Enya the Hag to eliminate the Joestar group, Devo traveled to Singapore and ambushed Jean Pierre Polnareff inside his hotel room by hiding in a mini-fridge. After provoking Polnareff into injuring him, Devo retreated to a bathroom to launch his main assault, controlling a puppet remotely. He trapped Polnareff beneath a bed and killed a hotel staff member who entered the room. Devo attempted to electrocute Polnareff using a hairdryer, but Polnareff located the puppet using a mirror fragment. Polnareff's Stand retaliated, slicing the puppet to pieces and leaving Devo fatally mangled in his hiding spot.
Relationships
Devo served under DIO and was deployed to fight by Enya the Hag. He engaged in a lethal battle against Jean Pierre Polnareff in Singapore. Prior to their encounter, Muhammad Avdol was already aware of Devo's identity and his strategy of using self-inflicted injuries to power up Stand attacks. Within DIO's mercenary network, Devo expressed contempt for Hol Horse, mocking his tendency to rely on partners and calling him a perpetual second-in-command who hides behind others.
Trivia
Devo's name is derived from the American rock band Devo. The band notably released a song titled "Puppet Boy," which matches Devo's puppet-controlling Stand ability. In the fighting game JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future, his character ending depicts an alternate scenario where defeating DIO elevates Devo to the undisputed leader of the criminal underworld.
