Overview

Kars is the primary antagonist and final boss of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2: Battle Tendency. He is the leader of the Pillar Men, an ancient and powerful species. A mastermind of extraordinary intellect, he created the Stone Mask to conquer his race's fatal weakness to sunlight. Driven by his ambition to become the Ultimate Lifeform, he seeks the Red Stone of Aja and engages in a relentless battle against Joseph Joestar and the Ripple warriors.

Appearance

Kars possesses long, wavy purple hair and red eyes. A horn protrudes from his forehead, which he conceals beneath a turban-like headwrap. His standard attire consists of earrings and a loincloth, displaying a sculpted, muscular torso. After transforming into the Ultimate Lifeform, his altered body allows him to sprout wings from his back and arms to achieve flight.

Personality

Kars is pragmatic, calculating, and ruthless, prioritizing victory above all else without regard for conventional honor. Despite his cruelty toward humans—whom he views merely as food—he maintains a strong sense of camaraderie toward his fellow Pillar Men, Esidisi and Wamuu, harboring intense vengefulness after their deaths. Strangely, he exhibits a selective respect for nature, going out of his way to protect small animals and flowers. However, upon achieving ultimate power, his arrogance consumes him, discarding all moral constraints.

Abilities

Kars utilizes the Light Mode technique known as Light Blades, projecting high-speed, serrated bone blades from his forearms and legs. Operating like chainsaws, these blades cleanly slice through heavy steel plates, buildings, and flying bullets, while their intense light reflection can blind foes. He can assimilate target tissue through his blades and sense thermal signatures behind obstacles. As the Ultimate Lifeform, he achieves immortality, an IQ over 400, telescopic vision, and the ability to shapeshift his cells into any living creature. He can also project an overwhelmingly powerful Ripple and form insulating chitin shells to survive molten lava.

Background

Born tens of thousands of years ago within an ancient nocturnal race vulnerable to sunlight, Kars created the Stone Mask to conquer this weakness. When his clan deemed his ambition dangerous and turned against him, Kars slaughtered them alongside Esidisi, taking the infants Wamuu and Santana with them. Seeking the Super Aja to complete his mask, he entered a millennia-long slumber beneath Rome before awakening in 1939. In Switzerland, he used the Red Stone of Aja alongside ultraviolet light to transform into the Ultimate Lifeform. However, during his final confrontation with Joseph Joestar, a volcanic eruption launched him into outer space. Frozen in the vacuum, he transformed into a mineral-organic hybrid entity and eventually stopped thinking.

Relationships

Kars shares his deepest bond with Esidisi, his longtime comrade who shared his vision and sacrificed himself to secure the Red Stone of Aja. He holds high regard for Wamuu, whom he raised from an infant into a formidable warrior. Conversely, he views Santana as an inexperienced youth left behind to guard their sanctuary. Joseph Joestar is his primary nemesis who consistently thwarts his ambitions and ultimately seals his fate. During his battle with Joseph's master, Lisa Lisa, Kars employs underhanded tactics and takes her hostage to gain the upper hand.

Trivia

His name is derived from the American rock band The Cars. Uniquely among the main antagonists in the series, Kars never directly kills a named human hero character during the story. His ultimate fate of floating indefinitely through the frozen vacuum of space led to the famous phrase 'he stopped thinking,' which remains one of the most iconic moments in the series.
