Overview
Doctor Ferdinand is a minor antagonist featured in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run. Serving as an assassin dispatched by President Funny Valentine during the race's third stage, he is a trained geologist and paleontologist who encounters Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar. Utilizing his supernatural ability to turn living organisms into controllable dinosaurs, he seeks to secure the parts of the Saint's Corpse for his employer. Despite his delicate and feminine aesthetic, he is male and holds a fanatic reverence for nature and the physical earth itself.
Appearance
Doctor Ferdinand is a male character with a distinctly feminine presentation, featuring long blonde hair and blue eyes. He wears a hood drawn over his head, earrings and other jewelry, along with lipstick on his lips and gloves on his hands. His intricate outfit and soft facial features frequently lead others to initially mistake him for a woman.
Personality
Highly arrogant and condescending, Doctor Ferdinand holds deep contempt for most human beings, viewing them with disdain. However, he harbors an intense reverence for the natural world and the ground itself, becoming furious whenever he witnesses actions that disrespect the Earth, such as littering. He is driven by a belief in cosmic retribution and the laws of nature. Despite his lofty rhetoric, he exhibits a crafty and cowardly side during combat, often avoiding direct physical danger by relying on hidden positioning.
Abilities
Doctor Ferdinand commands the Stand Scary Monsters, which allows him to transform any living being other than himself into a dinosaur under his absolute control. Creatures wounded by his dinosaurs also gradually turn into dinosaurs themselves. These transformed entities can only perceive moving targets. He can also conceal his own body inside a dinosaur. However, individuals holding a piece of the Saint's Corpse are immune to his influence. His Stand possesses Destructive Power B, Speed B, Range D, Persistence A, Precision C, and Developmental Potential B.
Background
Two years prior to the events of the race, Doctor Ferdinand obtained his powers while exploring the mysterious phenomenon known as the Devil's Palm in Arizona. Later hired as an assassin by President Funny Valentine, he ambushed Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar near a village in the Rocky Mountains to seize the Saint's Corpse. By turning Diego Brando, local inhabitants, and surrounding wildlife into prehistoric beasts, he pushed the protagonists to their limits. However, Gyro Zeppeli unlocked the Scan technique to expose Ferdinand's hiding spot, allowing Johnny Joestar to land a decisive blow. Stripped of his active control, Ferdinand was tragically mauled to death by a pack of wild cougars returning to their original forms.
Relationships
Doctor Ferdinand works under the direction of President Funny Valentine to eliminate targets during the competition. In battle, he temporarily subjugated Diego Brando by turning him into a dinosaur, though after Ferdinand's demise, his Stand power was ultimately inherited by Diego Brando through the Saint's Corpse. He acts as a direct adversary to Gyro Zeppeli and Johnny Joestar in their shared quest to collect the sacred body parts.
Trivia
The character's name is believed to be derived from the Scottish rock band Franz Ferdinand. Series creator Hirohiko Araki noted that the inspiration for Doctor Ferdinand's dinosaur-transforming Stand ability came from the film Jurassic Park, noting that its crafty nature complemented the overall persona of Diego Brando as well.
