Overview

Erina Pendleton is the primary heroine of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood (Part 1) and also appears in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency (Part 2). Initially introduced as the romantic interest of protagonist Jonathan Joestar, she eventually marries him to become Erina Joestar. Possessing refined manners, deep devotion, and an unyielding spirit, she plays a central role in continuing and preserving the Joestar bloodline.

Appearance

During her youth, Erina has long, wavy blonde hair worn in styles such as a center part, half-up, or pinned-up look. Her eyes are depicted as blue in the television animation and green in the theatrical film version. She wears traditional 19th-century dresses as well as a nurse uniform. In her later years during Battle Tendency, her hair changes to silver.

Personality

Raised with the traditional etiquette of a 19th-century British lady, Erina is gentle, polite, and refined. Around Jonathan Joestar, she displays a warm and cheerful side, yet she possesses an immovable sense of pride and personal conviction beneath her calm exterior. When insulted by Dio Brando, she demonstrated her intense dignity by defiantly rinsing her mouth with muddy water. She is selflessly caring and remains utterly loyal to her husband throughout her entire life.

Abilities

While possessing no supernormal powers or combat capabilities, Erina is a skilled nurse who learned medical patient care at her doctor father's practice. During Jonathan Joestar's recovery from life-threatening injuries, she demonstrated remarkable endurance by wringing out cold towels over a thousand times despite injury to her own hands. In her later years, she also possessed the intellectual capacity to work as an English teacher at a primary school.

Background

Raised in rural England, Erina formed a close childhood bond with Jonathan Joestar after he saved her from bullies. Though separated following an interference by Dio Brando, she reunited with Jonathan seven years later as a nurse and nursed him back to health, leading to their marriage in February 1889. During their honeymoon voyage, their ship was attacked by Dio; following Jonathan's dying wish, she escaped the burning vessel carrying an orphaned infant. She later gave birth to George Joestar II, whom she raised on her own. Decades later, she relocated to the United States with her grandson Joseph Joestar and passed away peacefully at age 81.

Relationships

Erina maintained absolute devotion to her husband, Jonathan Joestar, loving only him for the rest of her life. She harbored deep resentment toward Dio Brando for his personal insults and for taking Jonathan's life. She raised her son, George Joestar II, and her grandson, Joseph Joestar, with immense maternal love. She shared long-standing trust with family allies Robert E. O. Speedwagon and Straizo, while the orphan baby she saved from the ship eventually grew up to become Lisa Lisa and married her son.

Trivia

Erina Pendleton's name was inspired by the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby. The scene in Part 1 where Dio Brando forcibly kisses her became an iconic culture reference within the series and has been parodied in various anime and manga. Furthermore, design and narrative traits of her character were carried over into later series installments, serving as the basis for characters such as Lucy Steel and Rina Higashikata.
