Overview
J. Geil is a minor antagonist featured in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders. Operating as one of the assassins dispatched by DIO and the son of Enya the Hag, he is a ruthless criminal known as the man with two right hands. Responsible for the tragic murder of Jean-Pierre Polnareff's younger sister, he becomes the primary target of Polnareff's quest for vengeance. Teaming up with Hol Horse, J. Geil utilizes his Stand, Hanged Man, to ambush and eliminate members of the Joestar group.
Appearance
His most distinctive physical trait is that both of his hands are right hands. Described as having a hideous appearance, he rarely exposes his face directly. His Stand, Hanged Man, takes on a humanoid shape resembling a mummy wrapped in bandages, equipped with a blade mounted on its wrist.
Personality
Depraved, cowardly, and thoroughly sadistic, J. Geil acts purely to satisfy his own vile desires without a shred of remorse. In combat, he unhesitatingly uses innocent civilians, beggars, and children as human shields or proxies for his Stand, taking pleasure in psychologically tormenting his targets by mocking their deceased loved ones. Despite his utterly despicable nature, his mother, Enya the Hag, harbors a blind, doting affection for him, believing him to be pure-hearted. He maintains a pragmatic professional partnership with Hol Horse, sharing a mutual understanding of each other's powers.
Abilities
His Stand, Hanged Man, corresponds to the 12th Major Arcana tarot card and operates as a light-based entity. It inhabits any light-reflecting surface, including mirrors, glass, water puddles, and human eyes. By attacking a victim's reflected image with its wrist blade, the damage is mirrored directly onto their physical body. It remains invincible while submerged inside a reflection; however, moving between surfaces requires it to travel through real space in a single straight trajectory. Additionally, if its host reflection vanishes or goes dark, the Stand is forcibly expelled toward another nearby reflector. J. Geil himself possesses extraordinary swiftness, capable of vanishing instantly from plain view.
Background
Years prior to the series' main events, J. Geil committed multiple horrific crimes, culminating in the murder of Jean-Pierre Polnareff's sister, Sherry, and leaving her friend severely injured. The sole clue left behind—that the killer had two right hands—drove Polnareff on a journey of revenge. Operating in India alongside Hol Horse under DIO's orders, J. Geil ambushed the Joestar group and played a key role in critically wounding Muhammad Avdol. He later trapped Polnareff and Noriaki Kakyoin in a slum by concealing Hanged Man within the eyes of local residents. However, Kakyoin restricted his movement path using a tossed coin, and Polnareff kicked up sand to force onlookers to close their eyes. Exposed in mid-air, Hanged Man was sliced by Silver Chariot, and J. Geil was impaled, ultimately dying upside-down on a metal fence.
Relationships
Enya the Hag is his mother, who shares the physical anomaly of having two right hands and dotes on him unconditionally without realizing his atrocious nature. Jean-Pierre Polnareff is his bitter enemy whose sister Sherry he murdered, culminating in Polnareff executing him. Noriaki Kakyoin is an opponent who analyzed Hanged Man's mechanics and expressed total disgust toward J. Geil's lack of morality. Hol Horse is his mercenary battle partner in India, maintaining a mutual understanding of each other's powers. DIO is the villainous master whom J. Geil and his mother loyally serve.
Trivia
His name is derived from the American rock group The J. Geils Band and its frontman. Notably, the character Guile from Street Fighter II accidentally took his name from J. Geil during development due to a mix-up, despite Guile's visual design being modeled after Polnareff. On artwork platforms such as pixiv, J. Geil has become a popular joke and meta-tag used to point out accidental drawing mistakes where a character is drawn with two right or two left hands. In fighting games featuring JoJo, J. Geil frequently appears alongside Hol Horse as part of the latter's special movesets.
