He is the primary organizer and promoter of the titular cross-continental horse race across North America. Standing well over 190 centimeters tall, he is an experienced showman whose career experienced dramatic highs and lows. After hitting financial rock bottom, an idea sparked by a young girl named Lucy Pendleton led him to establish the grand Steel Ball Run competition. Although dragged into President Funny Valentine's conspiracy regarding the Holy Corpse, Steven remains a pivotal figure whose devotion to his young wife drives his actions throughout the event.
Appearance
Steven Steel is a tall man standing over 190 centimeters with blonde hair and yellow eyes. He has a bald head covered by a smooth, fitted cap featuring serrated, jagged edges around its base. He wears small rectangular glasses on his face. His primary outfit consists of a high-collared long coat adorned with multiple decorative tassels along the collar area, paired with matching pants.
Personality
On the surface, Steven Steel presents himself as a charismatic and passionate showman who delivers inspiring speeches about pioneering spirit and facing hardship. However, he frequently slips up by uttering goofy or airheaded remarks immediately following a solemn address. Beneath his grand theatrical persona lies a timid and emotionally dependent nature, often showing his vulnerable side exclusively to his wife, Lucy. Despite his eccentricities, Steven possesses profound kindness and generosity, as shown when he rescued Lucy from debt without expecting romantic reciprocity. When pushed to the limit, he demonstrates remarkable resilience to protect those he loves.
Abilities
Steven Steel possesses exceptional talent as a promoter and showman, capable of planning and marketing massive events and sensational publicity campaigns. His past endeavors gave him skills ranging from cavalry riding and heavyweight boxing to debt collection. During his time in the circus, he gained fame for a specialty trick where he swallowed live goldfish into his mouth and spouted them out through his nose. While he does not possess supernatural Stand powers, he exhibits sharp resourcefulness and high durability under extreme physical strain.
Background
Born in New York in 1840 to a poor blacksmith family, Steven Steel lost his childhood sweetheart in a tragic carriage accident at age fifteen. He joined the cavalry but was discharged following a two-year hospital isolation due to illness. He later gained fame in the circus with his goldfish trick before shifting between careers as a heavyweight boxer and debt collector, briefly going into hiding after being shot in the knee by mobsters. He rebounded in his forties as a hit promoter for sensationalist expeditions, building a fortune before losing it all to a newspaper fraud scandal. In 1888, a conversation with young Lucy Pendleton inspired him to launch the Steel Ball Run race. To protect Lucy from her father's mafia debts, Steven offered a fake marriage to shield her. During the race, he was drawn into President Valentine's plot, surviving critical gunshot wounds. Following Valentine's downfall, Steven donated all his race profits to charity and settled into a peaceful life with Lucy.
Relationships
Lucy Steel (born Lucy Pendleton) is Steven's beloved wife. Although their marriage began as a nominal union to protect her from being sold to the mafia, it evolved into a deeply loving and trusting partnership. Funny Valentine, the President of the United States, manipulated Steven's race to collect the Holy Corpse and held Steven captive after discovering Lucy's infiltration. Magent Magent, a mercenary acting under Valentine's orders, shot Steven twice in the right chest, leaving him critically injured. Steven also maintained a fateful connection with race contestants Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli, eventually intervening to save Johnny from his own infinite rotation ability after Valentine's downfall.
Trivia
