Overview

Gyro Zeppeli, whose true name is Julius Caesar Zeppeli, is one of the main protagonists of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 7: Steel Ball Run. Hailing from the Kingdom of Naples at twenty-four years of age, he is the eldest son of the prestigious Zeppeli family, who serve as both medical doctors and royal executioners. He enters the cross-country Steel Ball Run race to secure a royal pardon for an innocent young boy named Marco, forming a close partnership with Johnny Joestar along the way.

Appearance

Gyro is a man with long blonde hair, short bangs, and green eyes. His facial features include square-shaped patches of hair along his jawline and distinctively colored lips in green or blue, along with gold front teeth engraved with lettering. He wears a wide-brimmed cowboy hat featuring elongated slits, a short-sleeved shirt with a high collar and rivets, and a lightweight cape. His attire is completed by forearm rings, gauntlets, and pants integrated with boots that bear spurs. Instead of handguns, his waist holsters carry a pair of iron spheres, and his belt harness features stylized hand motifs directed downward toward his groin.

Personality

Gyro possesses a highly rational and analytical mind, enabling him to make swift, pragmatic decisions under pressure. Driven by a firm personal moral code, he seeks to validate his own path in life rather than pursuing victory through ruthless, unprovoked violence. This contrasts with Johnny Joestar's single-minded intensity. Despite his grounded intellect, Gyro displays a playful and eccentric demeanor, marked by his distinct chuckle, a penchant for making strange jokes and composing songs, and a refusal to part with a seemingly useless teddy bear. He is deeply caring toward his companions, frequently brewing an intensely bitter, heavy Italian coffee with equal parts sugar and coffee to revive their spirits on the road.

Abilities

Gyro is a master of his family's inherited Spin technology, utilizing palm-sized steel balls to channel rotational energy. This technique generates vibrations capable of affecting living tissue, altering bodily structures, shattering metal, stirring sand, or creating mirages. By applying the natural ratio of the Golden Rectangle, his throws reach their maximum potential. Upon obtaining the Holy Corpse's right eye, he temporarily unlocked the Stand ability Scan, embedding an eye onto his sphere to share vision and reveal enemy weaknesses. Through the Mounted Spin, he can manifest Ball Breaker, an energy entity capable of bypassing dimensional defenses and inducing rapid aging. Additionally, he is an exceptionally talented equestrian riding his horse, Valkyrie.

Background

Born in 1866 as the eldest son of the Zeppeli family in the Kingdom of Naples, Gyro was raised to fulfill his family's dual legacy as skilled medical practitioners and royal executioners. Trained in surgery and execution methods from a young age, his life took a critical turn at twenty-four when he was assigned to execute Marco, a young shoe-shine boy falsely condemned for high treason. Refusing to accept the execution of an innocent child, Gyro learned of the Steel Ball Run race across North America and its grand prize: a royal amnesty from his king. To save Marco's life, he crossed the Atlantic to enter the competition, soon becoming embroiled in a dangerous quest involving the Holy Corpse and the assassins of President Funny Valentine.

Relationships

Gyro forms a profound bond with Johnny Joestar, serving as both his steadfast partner throughout the Steel Ball Run and his instructor in the art of the Spin. His father, Gregorio Zeppeli, instilled in him the strict duties and techniques of their family lineage. The young shoe-shine boy Marco serves as the primary catalyst for Gyro's journey, as Gyro risks everything to earn his salvation. In opposition stands President Funny Valentine, who targets Gyro during the pursuit of the Holy Corpse. Gyro also shares a deep trust with his horse, Valkyrie, relying on her strength to navigate the grueling cross-country race.

Trivia

Gyro's character concept was inspired by the real-life French royal executioner Charles-Henri Sanson. His full legal name, Julius Caesar Zeppeli, directly references Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli from Part 2, continuing the recurring motif of Zeppeli family members mentoring the main protagonist and entrusting them with their legacy. Furthermore, the name of his horse, Valkyrie, derives from Norse mythology and Richard Wagner's famed opera piece Ride of the Valkyries.
