Overview
Vinegar Doppio is a key character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind. Serving within the Italian gang Passione, he acts as the personal right-hand man and liaison for the organization's secretive leader. In reality, he is the alternate personality of the gang's Boss, Diavolo. However, Doppio remains entirely unaware of his shared identity, believing himself to be an independent and fiercely devoted subordinate directly answering to his commander.
Appearance
Vinegar Doppio features long hair styled with a single tuft of bangs hanging over his forehead and braided hair at the back, along with freckles on his face. In original depictions, he is portrayed with purple hair and brown eyes, whereas the animated version depicts him with pink hair and dark yellow eyes. His outfit consists of a ribbed turtleneck sweater with an open cut-out at the chest and long trousers.
Personality
On the surface, Vinegar Doppio is a polite, mild-mannered, and indecisive young man who appears harmless. He holds absolute faith and devotion toward the Boss of Passione, firmly believing himself to be the leader's most trusted subordinate. However, whenever his true identity or the Boss's secrets are threatened, he instantly shifts into intense rage, exposing a ruthless and aggressive nature. In battle, he possesses remarkable resolve, facing dangerous situations with desperate courage. He also exhibits a unique quirk of mouth-imitating telephone ringtones and frantically grabbing nearby objects to use as receivers for communication with his leader.
Abilities
Vinegar Doppio is capable of partially wielding the Stand King Crimson, a power he believes is temporarily lent to him by the Boss. His access is limited to fractional abilities, specifically using Epitaph for vision of future events and summoning King Crimson's arms to execute physical blows. He cannot perform the advanced time-erasure ability associated with the Stand's full form.
Background
Operating as the personal envoy for Passione's elusive leader, Vinegar Doppio was tasked with carrying out critical missions that required the Boss's direct intervention. Sent to Sardinia to safeguard secrets concerning the Boss's past, he crossed paths with Risotto Nero, the leader of the gang's assassin squad. Despite sustaining severe damage during their encounter, Doppio secured victory through strategic adaptability. Following this confrontation, he traveled to Rome under instructions to track down Bruno Bucciarati and his renegade squad.
Relationships
Vinegar Doppio maintains unyielding loyalty toward Diavolo, whom he views as his supreme leader and regularly communicates with via unconventional phone calls. He engaged in a life-or-death battle against Risotto Nero, the leader of the assassin team, who deduced his unusual nature during their encounter in Sardinia. Additionally, he pursued Bruno Bucciarati and his squad of renegades, interacting with them while keeping his true ties to the Boss hidden.
Trivia
His given name "Doppio" originates from the Italian word for "double," serving as a linguistic reference to his dual personality, while "Vinegar" refers to the condiment. He is widely remembered for his bizarre habit of mistaking everyday items—such as ice cream, discarded cigarettes, stuffed animals, and live frogs—for telephone receivers whenever he receives callings from his alter ego. Furthermore, after suffering severe blood loss during combat, he replenished his body's depleted iron levels by eating a live frog whole.
