Overview
Boingo is an antagonist appearing in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders. As a member of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods working under DIO, he is the younger brother of Oingo. Extremely shy and socially withdrawn, he wields the Stand Tohth, which possesses the uncanny ability to foresee near-future events through a comic book format. Despite his timid demeanor, he serves as the tactical mind of the duo, providing predictions to guide their ambushes against the Joestar group.
Appearance
Boingo is a dark-skinned boy around ten years old with droopy eyes, featuring blue irises in the colored manga and purple irises in the animated adaptation. He has a voluminous, unruly afro hairstyle accompanied by prominent bangs hanging down his forehead. He wears a sun visor hat and loose, oversized clothing consisting of layered short- and long-sleeved shirts under a vest. He frequently conceals his entire body inside a large wooden crate while moving and constantly carries a comic book in his hands.
Personality
Boingo is extraordinarily introverted, paranoid, and timid. He suffers from severe social anxiety, rendering him incapable of speaking naturally to anyone other than his older brother. He copes with public settings by hiding inside a wooden box to avoid interactions. Despite his weak-willed nature, he bursts into a distinctively eerie, high-pitched chuckle whenever his Stand's predictions come true. Although he briefly expresses a desire to reform and use his power for positive ends after witnessing his allies' failures, a sudden stroke of bad luck resets his disposition to an even deeper state of gloom.
Abilities
Boingo commands the Stand Tohth, which takes the physical form of a comic book. Unlike most Stands, Tohth is visible to non-Stand users and does not reflect physical damage back to Boingo. As time passes, surreal comic panels emerge on its pages, revealing absolute predictions of the immediate future. While the foretold outcomes are immutable, the Stand remains entirely neutral, detailing only specific actions and end results without explaining the underlying context. If a user misinterprets a prediction or strays from the precise timing, the prophecy will inevitably backfire on them.
Background
Raised in a harsh household dominated by an alcoholic father who once pawned his Stand book for drinking money, Boingo eventually entered the service of DIO alongside his older brother. Operating as part of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods, the duo ambushed the Joestar party in Aswan, Egypt. Their plot collapsed when Oingo inadvertently blew himself up with his own disguised bomb. Later, while hospitalized, Boingo was coerced by Hol Horse into forming a new partnership in Cairo. When their attempt to assassinate Jotaro Kujo backfired due to Hol Horse firing his gun prematurely, Boingo realized the vanity of vengeance and vowed to reform. However, his newly found resolve was instantly shattered when a box he kicked inadvertently struck the stray dog Iggy, leaving Boingo severely mauled and back in the hospital.
Relationships
Boingo relies completely on his older brother, Oingo, who serves as his sole emotional anchor and the only person he comfortably talks to. Following Oingo's downfall, he is press-ganged into partnering with the mercenary Hol Horse; though their relationship begins through intimidation, Hol Horse gradually learns to place complete faith in Boingo's Stand. Towards Jotaro Kujo and the Joestar group, Boingo acts as a covert assassin, though the protagonists remain completely oblivious to his presence throughout their encounters. His brief encounter with the stray dog Iggy ends disastrously when an accidental impact leads to Iggy violently attacking him.
Trivia
Boingo's name is derived from the American new wave musical group Oingo Boingo, led by composer Danny Elfman. His Stand, Tohth, is named after the ancient Egyptian deity of wisdom and writing. In the animated series, his story arcs featured special ending themes titled Akuyaku Kyousoukyoku, performed in-character alongside Oingo and Hol Horse respectively, which gained widespread popularity for their quirky musical style.
