Ermes Costello

Overview

Ermes Costello is a main supporting character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean. Incarcerated at Green Dolphin Street Prison under inmate number FE40533, she becomes a loyal ally and close friend to the protagonist, Jolyne Cujoh. Known for her fierce dependability and pragmatic nature, Ermes awakens her Stand ability, Kiss, during her imprisonment and fights alongside Jolyne to face various threats within and beyond the facility.

Appearance

Ermes is a tall woman with black hair styled in long dreadlocks, green eyes, and green lipstick. She sports facial markings and scars across her forehead and chin. Her attire consists of a sleeveless top, a jacket, long pants, dress shoes, and armbands. She notably uses the scars from a breast enlargement surgery as a pocket to hide cash.

Personality

Ermes possesses a straightforward, high-spirited, and fiercely dependable personality. She holds a strong sense of personal conviction, refusing to rely on others when taking responsibility for her choices. Highly protective of those she cares about, she combines tough-minded resolve with deep empathy, sometimes resorting to wild gestures to snapshot allies out of despair or mourning lost comrades in private.

Abilities

Ermes commands the Stand Kiss, a high-powered close-range Stand that generates lip-shaped stickers from its hands. Placing a sticker on an object duplicates it into two identical copies. When the sticker is peeled off, the duplicates forcibly snap back together into a single object, causing severe physical damage to whatever is caught between them. Ermes cleverly uses this snapping mechanism to launch attacks, draw objects or herself across long distances, or temporarily split body parts to avoid incoming damage.

Background

Raised by a Mexican immigrant father, Ermes lost her older sister, Gloria, who was murdered by the gangster Sports Maxx after witnessing one of his crimes. Because the police failed to convict him of the murder, Ermes intentionally committed armed robbery to get sent to Green Dolphin Street Prison, where Sports Maxx was held, in order to execute her revenge. After gaining her Stand from a fragment of the Stand Arrow discarded by Jolyne Cujoh, she achieved her vengeance and subsequently chose to remain with Jolyne's group to counter the grand conspiracy of Father Enrico Pucci.

Relationships

Ermes shares a deep bond of friendship and mutual trust with Jolyne Cujoh, remaining by her side through every crisis. Her motivation stems from her love for her deceased sister, Gloria Costello, and her intense hatred for Sports Maxx. Within the prison, she forms solid alliances with Foo Fighters, Weather Report, Narciso Anasui, and Emporio Alniño, joining them in battle against their common enemy, Father Enrico Pucci.

Trivia

Ermes' name is derived from the French fashion house Hermès and the musician Elvis Costello. Creator Hirohiko Araki described her role in the story as a female counterpart to Jean-Pierre Polnareff due to her revenge-driven story arc. Her staunch resolve and honorable personality have earned her a reputation among fans as one of the standout heroic figures of the series.
