Overview
Straizo is a character from Hirohiko Araki's manga series JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, appearing in Part 1 Phantom Blood and Part 2 Battle Tendency. Initially introduced as a martial artist practicing the art of Hamon under Master Tonpetty, he assists in combatting Dio Brando's minions. By Part 2, he inherits the leadership of his Hamon order in Tibet, but his obsession with avoiding aging and death drives him to utilize the Stone Mask, turning himself into a vampire and serving as an antagonist against Joseph Joestar.
Appearance
In Part 1, at age 25, he is depicted as a handsome man with long black hair and dark eyes. By Part 2, despite being 75 years old, his hair turns silver while his face retains a youthful look resembling someone in his fifties. After turning into a vampire via the Stone Mask, he regains his 25-year-old appearance with black hair, red eyes, sharp claws, and fangs. He wears a specialized scarf woven from beetle intestines, though after surviving an explosive attack, his clothing is completely destroyed, leaving him to battle unclothed.
Personality
In his youth, Straizo was a disciplined warrior committed to fighting evil and protecting others. Beneath his noble exterior, however, lay a deep anxiety regarding the natural aging of his body. His secret fascination with Dio's power, beauty, and immortality gradually festered over the decades, eventually degrading into madness in his later years. As an antagonist, he exhibits a pragmatic and cold demeanor, willing to take innocent hostages or eliminate former allies to achieve his goals.
Abilities
As a master of Hamon, he specializes in powerful kick-based combat capable of defeating multiple undead foes simultaneously. He utilizes a custom scarf made from the intestines of Satiporoja beetles, which has an extraordinarily high Hamon conductivity, acting like a lightning rod to dissipate incoming Hamon attacks. Upon becoming a vampire, he acquires enhanced strength and rapid regeneration, as well as the ability to fire high-pressure fluid jets from his eyes, a technique he designates as Space Ripper Stingy Eyes.
Background
Trained under Master Tonpetty alongside his fellow disciple Dire, Straizo traveled to Windknight's Lot to reinforce the group fighting Dio. Following the battle, he adopted an orphaned baby girl, raising her to become a Hamon master and entrusting her with the Red Stone of Aja. He eventually succeeded his master as leader of the Hamon order. Decades later, upon discovering a cache of Stone Masks and a slumbering Pillar Man in Mexico, his suppressed desire for eternal youth proved overwhelming. He betrayed his companions, put on a mask, and headed to New York to eliminate Joseph Joestar.
Relationships
He studied under Master Tonpetty alongside his fellow student Dire. Although he maintained a decades-long acquaintance with Robert E. O. Speedwagon, he ultimately betrayed and attacked him to obtain the Stone Mask. He took in the infant saved during the ship disaster, raising her as his adoptive daughter and pupil, Lisa Lisa. In New York, he faced Joseph Joestar in battle, ultimately being defeated by the young man's resourcefulness and inheriting of Jonathan Joestar's noble spirit.
Trivia
His name is derived from the British rock band Dire Straits. A frantic fan letter published in the manga's volume release titled 'Aaaan! Stra-sama is dead!' became a well-known inside joke within the series' fandom. He holds the unique distinction of being the only vampire in the series capable of generating Hamon within his own body, which he ultimately used to end his own life after revealing the impending threat of the Pillar Men.
