Overview
Gray Fly is a minor antagonist featured in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders. Operating as an elderly mercenary under DIO, he uses his Stand, Tower of Gray, to orchestrate fatal accidents for personal profit. As the first mercenary encountered by the Joestar group who works purely for money and loyalty rather than brainwashing, he ambushes the heroes aboard a commercial flight during their journey toward Egypt.
Appearance
Gray Fly is portrayed as an elderly man with balding silver hair and blue eyes. Despite his unremarkable elderly appearance, his most distinct physical mark is a clear indentation in the shape of a stag beetle—matching the form of his Stand—imprinted directly onto the surface of his tongue.
Personality
Behind his initial front as a confused and harmless elderly passenger, Gray Fly is cruel, manipulative, and deeply sadistic. He causes mass disasters without hesitation to loot victims and possesses a gruesome habit of severing people's tongues. Unlike many of DIO's operatives, he was not controlled by a flesh bud, serving DIO willingly out of greed and fanatical devotion to DIO's absolute power.
Abilities
Gray Fly commands Tower of Gray, a flying Stand that takes the form of a stag beetle. Despite its low destructive force, the Stand exhibits extraordinary movement speed, enabling it to effortlessly dodge rapid punches from Star Platinum. Its signature attack involves extending a sharp secondary organ from inside its mouth, called the Tower Needle, to tear out human tongues.
Background
Prior to targeting the Joestar group, Gray Fly orchestrated numerous disasters, including a major plane crash in England that killed hundreds, using the chaos to loot the dead. Hired to halt the group's journey to Egypt, he boarded their plane and murdered the flight crew beforehand to force a crash. Mid-flight, he unleashed his Stand against the heroes, but Noriaki Kakyoin outsmarted him with Hierophant Green, delivering a fatal blow that split Gray Fly's head.
Relationships
Gray Fly serves DIO as a mercenary, holding immense respect for DIO's power and pledging total loyalty without requiring brainwashing by a flesh bud. He targets Kujo Jotaro and the rest of the Joestar group aboard the plane, but his assault is ultimately stopped by Noriaki Kakyoin.
Trivia
The Stand Tower of Gray takes its name from The Tower, the 16th Major Arcana card of the Tarot. Gray Fly's own name is derived from American musician Glenn Frey. Author Hirohiko Araki developed the concept for the character after observing a insect flying inside an airplane cabin during a flight.
