Overview
Mario Zucchero is a minor antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Vento Aureo. He is a Roman member of the Italian mafia organization Passione. Upon learning of the death of capo Polpo, Zucchero teams up with his partner Sale to pursue Bruno Bucciarati's squad in an attempt to steal Polpo's hidden fortune for personal gain.
Appearance
Zucchero is recognized by his swollen lips, drooping blue eyes, and a distinctive hairstyle shaped like a conch shell. His hair is colored gray in the manga and green in the TV anime adaptation. During an interrogation, a pair of glasses is placed over his face. He is also shown driving a red MG MGB sports car.
Personality
Zucchero is driven by greed and material ambition, desiring Polpo's fortune to live a carefree life abroad rather than climbing mafia ranks. He is hot-tempered and easily enraged when his plans falter, yet displays a crafty and patient tactical mindset when preparing ambushes. Despite his impulsive flaws, he possesses the grit of a hardened gangster, refusing to sell out his partner even under severe physical torture.
Abilities
Zucchero commands the humanoid Stand Soft Machine, which is armed with a rapier. Its parameters are Destructive Power A, Speed C, Range E, Persistence A, Precision D, and Developmental Potential E. Anything pierced by its rapier deflates paper-thin like a popped balloon. Living targets remain alive while deflated but lose consciousness and become incapacitated. Zucchero can also deflate his own body to move stealthily within deflated objects and tight spaces, though the Stand struggles in direct close-quarters combat due to its short range.
Background
Operating as a low-level Passione member in Rome, Zucchero set out to claim Polpo's secret stash after the capo's death. He ambushed Bruno Bucciarati's team aboard their chartered yacht, the Lagoon, by layering a second deflated boat over it and hiding inside the compressed space to capture squad members one by one. His trick was undone by Leone Abbacchio's tactical sacrifice and Bucciarati's sharp reasoning. Following his defeat, his head was detached from his body and subjected to painful interrogation, though he refused to confess. He was ultimately left unconscious on the vessel.
Relationships
He is close partners with fellow Passione member Sale, trusting him implicitly as they collaborate to secure Polpo's wealth. He acts as an adversary to Bruno Bucciarati and his squad members—including Giorno Giovanna, Leone Abbacchio, Pannacotta Fugo, Narancia Ghirga, and Guido Mista. After Zucchero's ambush fails, Bucciarati's team brutally interrogates him, during which Narancia, Mista, and Fugo perform their famous Torture Dance beside his suspended head.
Trivia
His surname Zucchero means sugar in Italian and is likely named after the Italian musician Zucchero Fornaciari. His Stand, Soft Machine, takes its name from the English jazz-rock band Soft Machine. The bizarre torture scene following his defeat, where Narancia, Mista, and Fugo perform the Torture Dance beside his suspended head, became one of the most iconic moments in the series. He also appears in the spin-off light novel Purple Haze Feedback.
