Overview

Kujo Jotaro is the main protagonist of Part 3 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Stardust Crusaders, and stands as one of the most iconic central characters across the franchise, later serving as a key ally and mentor in subsequent story arcs. A descendant of the Joestar bloodline born to a Japanese father and an American mother of British lineage, he is the user of the immensely powerful close-range Stand, Star Platinum. Evolving from a stern high school student into a distinguished marine biologist, Jotaro is defined by his unflappable composure, sharp intellect, and unyielding commitment to justice.

Appearance

Standing 195 centimeters tall and weighing 82 kilograms, Jotaro possesses a towering, muscular build marked by a star-shaped birthmark on his left shoulder. He has black hair with a single lock hanging over his forehead and green-tinted eyes. His most signature attribute is a dark peaked cap that seamlessly blends into his hair at the back of his head and is rarely removed. In his high school years, he wears a long black coat uniform accessorized with a heavy metallic collar chain, dual belts patterned with triangles, and round stud earrings. In later chapters, his outfit changes to a white coat and hat, and eventually to purple attire.

Personality

Jotaro maintains a stoic exterior, often speaking gruffly and displaying an impenetrable poker face. Because he rarely articulates his inner feelings, he is easily misunderstood as aloof or rebellious, yet he possesses a deeply caring nature toward his family and companions. He harbors an intense indignation toward those who exploit or harm the weak, pursuing deceitful enemies with ruthless retribution. Highly intelligent and observant, he excels at tactical deception, psychological warfare, and staying composed under high-pressure situations. He holds an appreciation for sumo wrestling and enjoys reading books about ships and aircraft.

Abilities

Even without his Stand, Jotaro exhibits exceptional physical toughness and hand-to-hand combat prowess, capable of defeating an armed adult even when temporarily turned into a child. His Stand, Star Platinum, is a short-range power entity operating within a two-meter radius, boasting top-tier strength, speed, precision, and visual acuity. Its signatures include a high-speed barrage of punches accompanied by a battle cry, and Star Finger, an attack that extends energy into his index and middle fingers to slice or pierce opponents. Through Star Platinum: The World, he can exceed the speed of light to halt time for intervals ranging from fractions of a second up to five seconds.

Background

Born to Japanese musician Sadao Kujo and his American wife Holly, Jotaro grew up in Japan. After mistaking his awakening Stand for a malevolent spirit, he confined himself in a jail cell until his grandfather, Joseph Joestar, explained the nature of Stands and the resurgence of the vampire DIO. To save his mother from a lethal Stand-induced sickness, Jotaro embarked on a fifty-day journey to Egypt alongside trusted allies, ultimately defeating DIO. He later earned a doctorate in marine biology with a dissertation on starfish. Over the years, he remained deeply involved in resolving Stand-related incidents, including matters in Morioh, investigations in Italy, and protecting his daughter.

Relationships

Despite his blunt speech toward his mother, Holly Kujo, Jotaro harbors profound filial devotion and journeyed across continents to save her life. He shares a strong bond of mutual trust with his grandfather, Joseph Joestar. During the Egyptian expedition, he formed unbreakable ties with allies Noriaki Kakyoin, Jean Pierre Polnareff, Muhammad Avdol, and Iggy. In later years, he served as a protective mentor to his younger uncle Josuke Higashikata and student Koichi Hirose. Although family circumstances created distance between him and his daughter Jolyne Cujoh, his paternal love drove him to protect her at all costs. His major foes include DIO, Yoshikage Kira, and Enrico Pucci.

Trivia

Jotaro's general visual identity and the thematic combination of a traditional school coat in a desert setting were influenced by Mitsuteru Yokoyama's classic manga Babil 2nd. The artistic choice to blend his peaked cap seamlessly into his hair at the back was devised by series creator Hirohiko Araki to ensure the character remains instantly recognizable from any angle. His verbal expression describing weary annoyance is widely recognized as his signature catchphrase. Among his personal preferences, he favors traditional, modest women, and he is a fan of the legendary sumo grand champion Chiyotafuji.
