Overview

Tonpeti is a supporting character in Part 1 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Phantom Blood. As a revered high priest and grandmaster of the Ripple martial arts based in Tibet, he leads hundreds of disciples in deep mountain training. Having instructed prominent practitioners such as Will A. Zeppeli, Dire, and Straizo, he travels to England with his pupils to assist Jonathan Joestar in the battle against Dio Brando.

Appearance

He is an elderly monk over sixty years of age, featured with a bald head, prominent facial hair, and dark eyes.

Personality

Tonpeti exhibits a serene and solemn personality suited to a spiritual leader. He holds profound respect for the movement of fate, treating the lives and inevitable deaths of others with gravity. Demonstrating a quiet commitment to his own traditions, he declines unfamiliar customs like handshakes in favor of greeting others with clasped hands.

Abilities

As a grandmaster, Tonpeti commands an exceptionally high level of Ripple energy. His distinctive technique is precognition, achieved by grasping a person's hand to read their life wavelength, which allows him to predict the exact time and location of their death. In the animated film adaptation, performing this prophecy generated immense Ripple energy that cleared clouds across surrounding mountain ranges.

Background

Tonpeti spent years training monks in the Tibetan mountains. He took Will A. Zeppeli as a student for three years and, upon the completion of his training, foresaw and disclosed Zeppeli's ultimate fate of sacrificial death. Upon receiving a written message from Zeppeli, Tonpeti led Dire and Straizo to England to reinforce Jonathan Joestar against Dio Brando. After the battle, he saw off Jonathan and his bride. His later life remains unrecorded, though Straizo eventually succeeded him as leader of the order.

Relationships

He served as the master to Will A. Zeppeli, Dire, and Straizo. He imparted a tragic prophecy of death to Zeppeli while honoring his pupil's resolve, and Straizo later took over his position as head master. Upon meeting Jonathan Joestar, Tonpeti offered his support as an ally against Dio Brando.

Trivia

His name is derived from the American musician Tom Petty.
