Overview
Bruford, known as the "Dark Knight," is an antagonist in Part 1 of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Phantom Blood. Originally a legendary 16th-century British hero, he is resurrected centuries later as a zombie by Dio Brando to fight against Jonathan Joestar.
Appearance
Bruford is characterized by his long, dark curly hair and blue eyes. He wears full medieval knight armor and carries a broadsword given to him by his queen, which features the word "LUCK" engraved on its blade.
Personality
Bruford embodies a profound code of chivalry and fierce loyalty. Although his initial resurrection as a zombie twisted his mind with bitter malice toward the living, he maintained his knightly honor. Moved by Jonathan Joestar's courage during their duel, he breaks free from his lingering grudge upon regaining his human compassion, finding peaceful serenity in his final moments.
Abilities
Bruford is a master swordsman capable of extraordinary underwater mobility, even while wearing heavy armor. His primary battle technique, "Danse Macab-Hair," allows him to freely manipulate his hair as a third limb to wield his sword, ensnare opponents, and launch surprise attacks. As a zombie, his prehensile hair is further empowered and can be used to drain blood.
Background
In 16th-century Britain, Bruford was a celebrated knight who conquered the grueling "77 Rings" trial while serving Mary, Queen of Scots. After being deceived and executed due to Elizabeth I, he lay dead for three centuries until Dio Brando revived him as a zombie in Windknight's Lot. He battles Jonathan Joestar, but after being cleansed by Jonathan's Hamon, he regains his soul. Using his blood to modify his sword's engraving from "LUCK" to "PLUCK," he bestows the weapon upon Jonathan before crumbling into dust.
Relationships
Bruford served Mary, Queen of Scots with unyielding devotion alongside his comrade Tarkus, but both fell victim to the treachery of Elizabeth I. In the modern era, he was raised as a servant by Dio Brando. Through their deadly battle, he develops deep admiration for Jonathan Joestar's noble spirit, gifting him his prized sword before passing on.
Trivia
Bruford's name is inspired by British drummer Bill Bruford. Within the narrative, he is a fictional historical knight. Because of his hair-manipulation technique, fans often draw comparisons between him and Yamagishi Yukako from Part 4. The official guidebook JOJO 6251 notably contained an erratum regarding his combat abilities.
